Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo and Aquarium News - 2013

As you well know, even if you can fund the construction of new exhibits, they need to be maintained. Operating costs would increase greatly and admissions would not cover them.
To expand an existing zoo quickly with 70 acres of new exhibits and new animals is a potential disaster for running the zoo well. Such an expansion ought not to be undertaken lightly.... and the construction costs would be astronomical.

We just don't see the Columbus Zoo in the same light as many other zoos. They have a golf course and waterpark in their pocket and not to mention Jack Hannah is a entity in and of himself.Columbus is a absolute beast when it comes to zoos if any one can take this on it would be them.Could it be that perhaps their focus is already beyond this Savannah and on the rumored downtown Rainforest project ?

Went to the zoo for a little bit this morning. There are several new buildings in Safari Africa visible from a few areas. If you look to the left before entering the Polar Frontier region you can easily see a large building which appears to be the new dining facility.

I am trying to get an accurate count of how many bonobos are in captivity in the United States. Does anyone know how many are at the Columbus Zoo? Name and ages would be helpful also.

It does not surprise me as this was one of my predictions of a pair that would have cubs. Nanuq, the male, had already sired two litters at the Buffalo Zoo, but they did not survive. However it was the second or third litter that produced Luna. Also, I heard Nanuq and Anana were quite busy mating earlier this year and it sounds like Aurora participated as well.

Africa - Rhino

Looks like Rhinos are not included in the final design for at least the first phase opening of Columbus' new African Safari exhibit. The zoo is opting instead for a sit-down restaurant overlooking the plains.

Wow. Ten whole species in this mega-exhibit. Bill of goods. Let me guess, one of the species will be the African pygmy goat!

I truly believed that this would be one of the best and most exciting exhibits in a long time. Turns out that we may have the biggest disappointment since elephant odyssey on the horizon.

Columbus's early statements of desire to create something on the level of what DAK does seem laughable in retrospect. They'll be lucky to have anything more than a larger version of what's already been done in Toledo and what's gradually being done in Cincinnati (only with more animals in Cincinnati).

On a positive note, Dallas Zoo's Giants of the Savanna only had 10 species when I visited in April and it is a blockbuster exhibit complex!
