Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo News - 2012

So the zoo will eventually have 4 beavers, in two separate exhibits? And will transfer their otters to a different zoo? That seems a little strange as they were having great success in breeding their otters.

That's not how I took what jusko88 said. I took it as eventually all four beavers will move to the bear enclosure and the otters will move back to their original enclosure. Jusko88, may I ask how you found about this swapping of enclosures? On Facebook the zoo merely says that, "Their new home is in the old otter habitat in North America." Why exactly would the otters move to the bear enclosure if that's where the beavers are supposed move?

The zoo uploaded a new video on their tiger cubs, and when they will be on exhibit.

The zoo has uploaded a video of their two polar bears, Aurora and Anana, with their Halloween pumpkin treats:

A new video by the zoo about how they prepare food for the fish.

However, they don't exactly tell you what they're feeding them.

Yesterday I visited the Columbus Zoo for the first time since August. A few observations:

-Looks like they've widened the pathway leading into the North American region (next to the elephant building).
-Added a large gorilla statue outside the gorilla building for photo ops.
-Safari Africa construction is well underway - lots of dirt pushing and fences around the perimeter going up.
-Didn't see any otters in the old black bear enclosure but there was a single beaver in the former otter exhibit
-I shot a short video of the tiger cubs playing out in the yard (the first time I have ever seen them in person).

I plan on heading back in a few weeks to check out Wildlights.

Thanks for the little update Amnesiac; I haven't heard much news from Columbus in a while. I really need to set aside a day and visit.

It's not that old brick house across the street from the New Hope church is it?

It's the farmhouse on old Powell Rd, which is now a service road, just down the way from the administrative offices, animal hospital, and marketing & promotions building.

The 30-day quarantine is over and Nanuq the male polar bear has joined the zoo's two females on exhibit in Polar Frontier.

This has probably been stated earlier but what ever happened to those six surviving animals of the 2011 Ohio exotic animal release that were sent to the Columbus Zoo? I know one of the Leopards was injured and was put down but how was it injured and what about the other animals?

The other animals were given back to Marian Thompson, widow of Terry Thompson who released the animals before killing himself.

They will have to be registered with the state under the new exotic animal law, and the enclosures have to meet more stringent standards.

I hope they are in better conditions there. I remeber seeing a Sulawesi Crested Macaque in the news video of the surviving six. I'm surprised a new law wasn't past to keep such endangered animals out of the public's hands unless they meet a ton of specific needs.

The law essentially makes it illegal to acquire new animals, and requires inspections and permits to keep existing animals.

I run the assignment desk at a Columbus television station and I've had access to a good amount of material from both the night of the tragedy and the months sense. The cat and bear enclosures in use now appear to be more than adequate, as opposed to the oversized dog kennels used previously.

I believe Ms. Thompson has a genuine love for the animals and I expect her to keep them healthy for the remainder of their lives.

All that's left is for the rest of the U.S. to follow. Then the world.

Jack Hanna was on Piers Morgan Tonight last night for the entire hour with many of the zoo's and The Wild's animal ambassadors including a snow leopard, cheetah, binturong, two swift foxes, a warthog, and quite a few others. If anyone is interested, the episode will be played again tonight at 9:00 p.m. EST on CNN.

Thank you for posting that. I really enjoyed the program although Piers wouldn't let Jack finish half his sentences and treated almost every animal like it was about to jump up and tear his face off. Spectacular species they have there at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. I'm trying to extend my Ohio trip that might happen over the summer to include Columbus along with Cincinnati. I didn't know Siberian Lynx were Extinct in the Wild?
