1) A male Silvered Leaf Langur was born on Monday, July 6. This is our third birth of the species at our zoo and we are one of two (the other is Bronx) that breeds the species in the US. We are hopeful another female is pregnant and if she is the baby will be due in fall. We also recently hatched a clutch of Eastern Plains Garter Snakes.
2) The new "Animals On Safari" show premiered on Monday and is a smash hit. This show will help our attendance which is already up significantly more than last year.
3) We continue to anticipate a baby Mandrill and a baby Red Panda.

I thought the San Diego Zoo also had bred Silvered Leaf Langurs?

Not yet. They have a breeding group but they have not produced any offspring yet.

I was at the SD zoo recently and the sign infront their langur exhibit said that they did have a birth on February 26th of this year. Are we talking about the same species? Silvered Leaf-Langur (T. cristatus)

Ituri - thanks for the link! I apologize, I hadn't heard anything about the troop for a while and I knew it was just a matter of time before they produced offspring as well. Well I guess we're up to the three breeding institutions! Which is great because I really want to keep the species in NA. It's a shame four other zoos have pairs or single langurs that could be used for breeding.

1) We have received six flamingo chicks from the National Zoo and are working on hand raising them. I have not heard a gender ratio but the goal of the acquisition of the chicks was the balance out our gender ratio that is currently 10.7 (with 9.4 available for breeding). We also did not produce any chicks this year.
2) Yesterday, our Markhors managed to escape, again. All were contained, and I dont know the whole story but I think its safe to say the AZA exhibit guidelines are going to have to be revised, again.
3) Final Dimensions for Polar Frontier make it the second largest Polar Bear exhibit in NA. Brown Bear exhibit: 34,000 sq. ft. (4X the size of current yard), Polar Bear exhibit: 57,000 sq. ft. with 167,000 gallon saltwater pool, and >2,000 sq. ft. Arctic Fox exhibit. We won't beat Detroit but we're gonna give 'em a run for their money!

Great news on the polar bear exhibit. I'm not sure if anything will top Detroit for quite a few years, but Columbus is a great zoo and I'm sure that the polar bears will thrive there. The grizzlies are also getting a new enclosure, and then the black bears also benefit with their expanded enclosure. Plus, the sun bear habitat is the best in North America. It must be nice to be a bear in Columbus!
Both bear exhibits are going to be enormous! That's good to hear they will be so large, and I think Columbus will take the position of runner-up in terms of best polar bear exhibit in America.
Red River Hogs
Thanks for all the updates ColumbusZoo001. I do have one question though, why are the red river hogs off exhibit? Were they doing renovations to the exhibit? It appeared the the fence separating them from the bonobos was a little bigger but maybe it was the lack of vegetation that just made it appear that way. Also did they ever recieve the other hog?

Lily was off exhibit for a few weeks in May. The keepers were increasing the hotwire and foliage to keep her in her yard and not the bonobo yard. She is now out 24/7. And no we haven't received Harold yet. I haven't heard any news on him so it will probably be a while until he gets out here.

Oh, I know it won't top it but no doubt it will be in the #2 or #3 spots.
A Few Updates:
1) We have yet to have a Mandrill or Red Panda baby but the window is still open according to the keepers so we'll wait and see.
2) We are 99% sure we have a pregnant lion which is a great way to end the year once she gives birth in fall. We might even break 2 mil in attendance!

I haven't heard this and like I always say - a transfer or an acquisition doesn't occur until the animal is actually on the truck lol.

Another Birth
I'm proud to announce that on Friday, August 28, our other breeding female Silvered Leaf Langur give birth. This is our second baby this year and fourth in total. We also tied San Diego for births this year!
We also have recently added an almost year old Black Tip Reef Shark from the Shedd Aquarium to our Discovery Reef exhibit. This move was to expand our shark collection and he will be a big draw to our visitors who are used to our carpet sharks and bonnetheads.
I'm sad to report that our female Fishing Cat passed away. Because we have a breeding male, I'm assuming the SSP will try to acquire a breeding female for us as soon as possible, as he is a proven breeder.
Fall will bring a lot of positive changes to our animal collection, with the anticipation of several births and many exciting acquisitions that will be announced when they occur. Stay tuned!

We were very convinced that one of our mandrills and one of our pandas was pregnant but it appears they are not (our Red Panda just gained a but of weight lol). The way our male Mandrill breeds I'm sure we will see mandrill babies in the near future and we will be altering our Red Panda pairings so maybe panda cubs next year.
