Dallas Zoo Dallas Zoo News 2022

Does the zoo still have spectacled langurs? I think St. Louis has just one and its living with a Francois' langur, but I could be wrong. I am wondering how many the zoo has and their ages, because I won't be anywhere near Texas for a few years, and I am hoping that the animals will still be alive when I am able to travel here.

They have 1.3 left on display in Primate Place in ZooNorth. They are all elderly, ranging in age from 20 to 26.

Per the zoo’s social media platforms, a Nile hippopotamus calf has been born at the zoo recently! It appears that a more detailed announcement will follow this “teaser” announcement in the near future.
First-time dad, Gus, and mom, Boipelo, welcomed a healthy calf on October 30th. It doesn’t appear the sex of the calf is known as of now.

The zoo is currently in the process of retheming the Herpetarium so that each of its four wings are focused on one of the zoo’s four conservation focuses — “Creating Healthy Habitats”, “Reducing Wildlife Trade”, “Reducing Climate Change”, and “Promoting Wildlife-Safe Purchases”. Through this retheming, exhibits are being renovated, animals are being moved around in the building, and the signage throughout the building is being standardized and updated in both English and Spanish.

Are they planning on keeping most of the same species?

I hope they still keep their rarities such as the Tuatara, Perentie, Inland Taipan, Samar Cobra, Cape Cobra, etc

Great idea. The building had been looking rough recently with empty exhibits and bad or non-existent signage. It'll also be good to see conservation messaging in there as well.

I have not heard any mention of removing species, only of moving species around within the building to better fit the new themes of each wing, so hopefully most if not all of the current species will remain on display.

I agree! The building has definitely been showing its age as of late, and its future was really uncertain at one point, so I am very glad to see the zoo doubling down and committing to breathing some fresh life into it. With a collection of its caliber and magnitude, it really deserves it. I think that deciding to the theme the wings of the building around the zoo’s conservation focuses is a really smart and innovative way to group these animals in a way that provides for more flexibility, is less limiting, and engages the visitors beyond the standard “these are snakes, these are amphibians” or “these are desert herps, these are rainforest herps” reptile house themes.

Plans for the reimagining of the old monorail should be out before the end of the year.
Any updates on this? Not to pester or anything, I'm just hopeful Dallas isn't able to take a permanent hit to their stellar African collection.

Nothing as of yet, unfortunately. At this point, I really would not expect any news until reaccreditation time in the spring. The only animal-centric projects the zoo is working on currently are the maned wolf habitat and the Herpetarium renovation. Otherwise, there are several visitor amenities in the works, including renovations of the restaurants in the Giants of the Savanna and Wilds of Africa Plaza and a virtual reality experience centered around mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park — also in the Wilds of Africa Plaza.

Speaking of which,

On December 4th, the zoo announced that the Serengeti Grill restaurant will be closed throughout most of December in order to get a "fresh new look".

On October 13th, it was announced that a (1.0) Sumatran tiger (believed to be Rudy) will be transferred to Downtown Aquarium Denver in Colorado in the near future.

On December 5th, the zoo officially announced that Rudi was transferred to Downton Aquarium Denver in Colorado, as well as mentioned that (0.2) African lions were recommended to go to an unspecified AZA facility in the near future.
