Dartmoor Zoo Dartmoor Zoo News

Just doing his bit for Lynx reintroduction. ;)

Seems the only way its going to happen with all the scare mongering about the trials.

I see that the Lynx was recaptured last night, he apparantly according to the news walked into one of the traps set for him.

A female Carpathian Lynx has arrived from Chessington to keep Flaviu company

3.0 Northern Cheetah have arrived from Landau this week (a pair of two year males and an older none breeding male)

In the UK TWZ and YWP hold them (and have them visibly on show …, so probably not candidates for reintro) and specifically HWP is a site where leopards will be bred for reintroduction projects away from the general public.

I cannot judge the sit at Dartmoor with the current Vlad the tiger exhibit, but I would think it is very distant from the HWP project.

It would be easy to screen off the current Jaguar exhibit at Dartmoor or the awful Canadian Wolf 'cage'. Amur leopards would be great, but they need some more animals and a general tidy/'smarten up' first. There isn't actually much to see if the bears are asleep.

I have not been there, but I get the impression this place doesn't seem to have developed very much since it was taken over eight or ten years ago, though its been improved overall. Is that a fair comment?

Well I've only visited once, January 2014. I watched the original program Ben's Zoo (2007?) which aired not long after he got it and I'd say it had hardly improved. Right away - Car park full of huge pot holes, entrance building looked like a dilapidated toilet block, paths uneven, slime on walls, railings. Toilets dirty & falling apart, old vehicles left decaying on walkway, rude students in DZP uniforms, not a lot of animals compared to say Exmoor Zoo. Loads of staff walking around in groups of three - why?! Maybe get them to tidy the place up? Sort out the paths, railings and walls? Overall I was unimpressed. Fair enough its had a rough past and his wife passed away not long after he got the zoo. But to leave it in such a run down state after seven years in my opinion is unacceptable.

Is Ben's zoo available online?
