As to expected from the Daily Mail, their article is even worse than the one from the Guardian... the choice of words alone ...
'Moronic' Dartmoor Zoo sparks fury for letting children as young as eight play TUG-OF-WAR with Lions | Daily Mail Online

I'm not entirely sure this tug-of-war thing is a very good idea or something that should be emulated, and I'm sure there are types of enrichment closer to lions' natural behavior they could have come up with, but I don't think the zoo is endangering the health or welfare of their lions or forcing them to do this.
 
I love Dartmoor and it's one of my favourite parks. I'm also lucky to have got to have spent an afternoon with Benjamin last year and found it fascinating. But I must admit, it was an experience which did make me sort of raise an eyebrow as I instantly thought it would be frowned upon by the anti's and was surprised it got the go ahead from the parks trustees.

There are some American facilities that have similar experiences, actually. I'm pretty sure Busch Gardens in Tampa either does or used to let people play tug of war with the tigers, and the San Antonio Zoo once had professional westlers do it with a lion. The Smithsonian National Zoo even lets you do it with an orangutan, albeit not quite the same as the big cat tugs of war.

and it now the main focus of WAMS Jan Garen(Rigby) on her facebook. Is this any different from allowing customer contact with lemurs for extra money, or giving doughnuts to chimps?
