These important renovations—which are planned to be completed within a year—include a new salt-water system, a new building with larger interior pools, a resurface and refresh of the outdoor pool and deck surfaces, and an upgraded underwater viewing area. i was there a couple of weeks ago; got to see one of the sea lions, and the albino alligators before they left. i have to say, denver zoo is probably the best zoo out of all the ones i’ve visited. i got much closer to the animals than i can at the phoenix zoo; i saw the lions and hyenas, neither one of which i’ve never seen in phoenix. saw a bunch of elephants and a komodo swimming.
 
Horrible news: Tobias the African lion had to be euthanized yesterday at only 7 1/2 years old:

Denver Zoo on Instagram: "We are deeply saddened to share that Tobias, beloved leader of our African lion family pride, was humanely euthanized October 11, 2023, at the age of seven. Tobias had several medical conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease with difficulty digesting certain proteins and chronic kidney disease. He has been under treatment and close monitoring by our Animal Care and Health teams to ensure he continued to have the best quality of life possible while managing his diseases. After a notable decline in his health earlier this week, Tobias was brought to our Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Animal Hospital for an exam. Our Veterinary Medicine team found that in addition to the progression of his chronic diseases, he developed a severe infection that spread to his lung and bones, all of which made his prognosis for recovery and return to good quality of life poor. Our Animal Care Specialists and Veterinary Medicine team made the difficult decision to euthanize Tobias to relieve any suffering given the poor prognosis. Tobias passed peacefully, surrounded by those who loved and cared for him. Our Veterinary Medicine team will conduct a postmortem exam to better understand the full breadth of his condition. Tobias, or Toby as he was fondly called, was born on March 5, 2016, at @buffalo_zoo. In 2018, he moved to Denver at the recommendation of @zoos_aquariums' Species Survival Plan to join our family pride and support African lion conservation efforts. Toby quickly became a beloved member of our pride and settled in wonderfully into his new home in Denver with our female lions: Neliah, Kamara, and Sabi. Soon after his arrival, we were celebrating huge conservation successes for Vulnerable African lions everywhere with the birth three adorable lion cubs: Tatu, Oskar and Araali. Toby’s impact at Denver Zoo was immeasurable and Predator Ridge will not be the same without his majestic, watchful gaze over his kingdom. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him, including his devoted fans from Buffalo who regularly checked in on their favorite lion. On November 28th, as part of the zoo's "Giving Tuesday" event, they announced they are raising funds to build a new mixed-species savannah for generic giraffe, Grevy's zebra, and common ostrich.

New species for the zoo!!

9-year old female Sumatran tiger “Chlojo” has been transferred to the zoo from the Nashville Zoo. She will rotate on habitat with the zoo’s 2 Amur tigers in The Edge habitat.

Denver Zoo on Instagram: "New species alert! We are thrilled to announce the arrival of Chlojo, a Critically Endangered Sumatran tiger! This nine-year-old female tiger joined us from @nashvillezoo on a recommendation from @zoos_aquariums. We can’t wait for the opportunity to introduce guests to Chlojo and connect them to her elusive counterparts. As the smallest tiger subspecies, Sumatran tigers can only be found on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It’s estimated that there are only 600 Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild and these Critically Endangered animals are threatened by habitat loss from logging, palm oil plantations and poaching. As Chlojo settles into her new home, she and our two Amur tigers, 12-year-old Viktor and 13-year-old Nikita, will rotate throughout the habitats in The Edge. Tigers are generally solitary animals, and our state-of-the-art habitat allows all three to comfortably share these spaces. Our Animal Care Specialists happily report that Chlojo is adjusting well and will soon start making appearances in The Edge. I was there this weekend. The red-flanked duiker pair are currently off-exhibit.

As for waterfowl...

There are ruddy shelducks Tadorna ferruginea in the Lorikeet Adventure.

In the Forest Aviary there are:

Scaly-sided merganser Mergus squamatus
Smew Mergellus albellus
Baer's pochard Aythya baeri
Marbled teal Marmaronetta angustirostris
Madagascar teal Anas bernieri
Puna teal Spatula puna
White-faced whistling-duck Dendrocygna viduata
Red-breasted goose Branta ruficollis

Thank you! Are the duiker normally outside or inside, at least? My potential visit would be end of January.
