More info about the planned renovations and where all the sea lions will be moved.
"We are temporarily saying goodbye to our California sea lions while we revamp their habitat. These important renovations—which are planned to be completed within a year—include a new salt-water system, a new building with larger interior pools, a resurface and refresh of the outdoor pool and deck surfaces, and an upgraded underwater viewing area. In addition to working closely with these precious pinnipeds to ensure they’re well-prepared for their temporary moves, our animal care specialists have also worked with care teams at AZA-accredited organizations around the country to make sure these transitions are as smooth and stress-free as possible for our sea lions.
While nine-year-old Maverick and eight-year-old Gunnison have already moved to their temporary homes at
Utah's Hogle Zoo and
Seneca Park Zoo, 16-year-old Nick will move to
Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and 22-year-old Luci and 13-year-old Ady will move to
Brookfield Zoo at the end of the month. We’re happy to share that Maverick and Gunnison are acclimating nicely and already making new sea lion friends!"
