Denver Zoo Denver Zoo News 2024

I hope it's not a bother that I'm asking questions instead of posting news, but I am going to Denver on June 17th. Any idea when the new Down Under exhibit will be open for the public?

The most recent timeframe I could find is spring 2024, but that is likely no longer happening based on the lack of publicity for it's opening.

I mean the map states that it will open this month, but who knows if that’s accurate?

I visited Denver Zoo in August 2022 and they described the Down Under exhibit as coming early in 2023 - it has now been a year past that date and a year and a half since my visit and they've shared very few progress updates. I hope this means a fantastic exhibit is on the way because it's been a long wait!

Our wallabies and kangaroos are hopping into their new Down Under habitat and getting acquainted with their surroundings! Down Under officially opens on May 24, but Denver Zoo members can enjoy exclusive previews from May 19-23.

Just days after we discussed it, the zoo has formally announced Down Under will open May 24.

I just discovered the updated Denver Zoo map and I'm in love with it. I've never seen a version with such detail, including the interior of the Tropical Discovery building. There's icons of each structure in the zoo, from restaurants to aviaries, and the colour-coded sections are eye-catching. This is a brilliant zoo map:

Thank you for drawing attention to this. I really loved the map from my previous visit. I didn't realize what an improvement this version was until I zoomed in - amazing to see they included the interior of Tropical Discovery! I don't know many zoos that still do that sort of thing. It's also so interesting to see how the interior of the zoo has been turned into an Africa theme and the northern section into an Asia theme that may well blur into Australasia with the new exhibit. Primate Panorama remains it's own thing and we get Into the Wild as the increasingly, weirdly standard 'grab bag miscellaneous zone' every zoo seems to need. Looks like it's official the capuchin have left Monkey Island permanently and are at PP in an official capacity.

The other really curious thing is the choice to turn the former Northern Shores here as 'Latin America' to tie the sea lions, flamingos and interior of Tropical Discovery together. Makes you wonder if the future renovations to the feline building may continue this theme, since it is placed in the area and currently has Geoffrey's Cat as a resident... although by surrounding Harmony Hill this may cut off the chance for the return of North American wildlife to the collection.

The one area I was and still am dissatisfied with is the Nurture Trail. Both the previous and current map do a poor job of drawing attention to this exhibit area.

It's strange to me that they marked "Historic Bear Mountain" despite it basically being phased out as an animal exhibit completely. I understand that for the bears since their section was a rather old-fashioned & cold concrete exhibit, but I always thought the coati exhibit was tasteful and interesting.

On June 29th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) lesser kudu named Ru was born on June 1st which is on exhibit. The zoo also announced they switched their kudu, gerenuk, and crane group with their addax brothers group.

On July 8th, the zoo announced that a (1.0) bald eagle named Toano passed away on July 3rd at around the age of 24+ due to a decline in health caused by severe heart disease.
