Detroit Zoo Detroit Zoo

Yes, Talini was first polar bear to be born in Arctic Ring Of Life. She was born in 2004 to Barle and Triton. What happned to there other polar bears Velma and Adak?

The Detroit Zoo was one of THE GREAT ZOOS for decades, the latest and most extensive in Hagenbeck design and planned to accomodate automobiles (as they liked to call them). But that was seventy years ago.

Now, Detroit has been a dead city (sorry anyone from Detroit) for decades, the zoo depends on the City, whose economy is dead. The Mayor is embroiled in a personal scandal (yesterday the City Council petitioned the Governor to remove him). The zoo's director had his own scandal a year or two ago (lying on his resume!), and when he gave up elephants, his zoo-director-colleagues were not happy with him.

We can be appreciative that the zoo holds on. In time, perhaps it can grow. But Detroit needs to get on its feet before the zoo can.

I agree with you Rob. Kawami Kilpatrick the mayor had a text messaging scandal and with the economy problem its been a wreck. But with the millage passed it is aquring new animals. They obtained a new Bactrian Camel a different subspecies than the ones that they already have. They also now have two Sichuan Takins they are both young males. I hear they are also supposed to add new primate and big cat exhibits. ISIS says they have two male drills. I am not sure if they are off exhibit but I didn't see them when I go there. They do have an exhibit though with three male gorillas, two female Mandrills, and one Diana Monkey an interesting combination.

Fantastic news!! I regard this zoo quite highly, and they arguably have the best exhibits in all of North America for polar bears, aardvarks, giant anteaters, binturong, tree kangaroos and an assortment of amphibians. Throw in the largest chimpanzee enclosure in North America, the largest musk ox enclosure, the largest red panda habitat, many other spacious paddocks, etc, and I feel that Detroit is one of the best and most underrated zoos around. I never see it on lists of the "best of the best", but perhaps with a few more alterations people will appreciate this historically important zoo.

When did they have musk ox? I don't ever remember seeing them?

My error on the muskoxen, as I think that I was getting carried away with all of the huge paddocks at the zoo.:)

I love the Detroit Zoo. The polar bear exhibit is easily the best one out there. Check out my video:

Zoo finds its footing under society control | freep.com | Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Zoo, an underrated establishment with the glorious Arctic Ring of Life exhibits, should hit an attendance mark of 1.25 million visitors this year. Surprisingly it comes at a time when the city is just about the most economically devastated in the entire United States. A staggering loss of jobs, the collapse of the auto industry, and massive unemployment and foreclosures haven't stopped locals from purchasing zoo memberships.

I started another thread about the Belle Isle Zoo, and since it hasn't got much traffic I was wondering whether someone that participated in this thread had any information on it. I am looking for anything pictures, history behind it, what animal species lived there, pretty much anything about it. Thanks!

The Detroit Zoo now has 4.2 for polar bears, but do they still have loan bears from another zoo (Como?) in that total? I'd love to revisit the brilliant Arctic Ring of Life!

According to the DZ press release dated April 13, 2009, Lee from LPZ joined
24 yo Barle, 4 yo Talini, 12 yo Neil and 12 yo Buzz. It's 3.2. Breeding recs for Barle or Talini.

Whatever happened to these bears that did live in Arctic Ring of Life

Regional tax breathes new life into Detroit Zoo | detnews.com | The Detroit News

The zoo is booming financially, as extra cash has allowed the zoo to catch up on repaving, painting and other upkeep while turning a $3.5 million deficit for 2007-08 into a projected surplus of $8.2 million this year. Zoo officials expect to end the year with $18.9 million in net assets, and last year had almost 1.3 million visitors through the turnstiles. It is all because of the regional tax vote that became law in 2008.

I hope they can weld that cash back into some exciting new exhibits and remodelling or rebuilding some of the more needy animal exhibits. :)

I'm hoping they ad some more big cats. Even though ungulates are my favorites after there recent additions I think they may be set in that area for awhile. But as of right now they only have Tigers and Lions as far as cats go.

I have a question, My partner and I are thinking of making a winter zoo trip in February to both the Detroit Zoo and Toledo Zoo. We were wondering how Detroit is in the Winter? How about viewing Arctic Circle? We are going mainly in the winter to see the Arctic exhibit and hopefully more active polar bears! Any other exhibits or things to be aware of in the winter in Detroit? Thanks!

Detroit Zoo is probably a bit better of a winter zoo than Toledo. For starters Arctic Ring is an awesome exhibit anytime of year if your really into polar bears its worth the trip alone. They have very good reptile and amphibian complexes and by the way forgot to mention Toledo also has a nice reptile building.Detroit has indoor viewing of there gorillas, chimps and mandrill. They have a historic penguin building, a nice indoor aviary and really sweet indoor river otter exhibit.Outdoors you can see lions, tigers and bears as well as snow monkeys which a really cool winter exhibit.Lions were still on exhibit in november but are supposed to be renovated not sure when it starts again if you got questions we know these zoos very well so dont hesitate to ask any questions you might have

Visitors flocked to Detroit Zoo in 2010 - dailytribune.com

For the 5th consecutive year Detroit Zoo had over 1 million visitors, and 2011 brings a new wildlife carousel, a massive animatronic dinosaur display (30 dinos) and later in the year the revamped lion exhibit. The 1928-era grotto will be filled in and glass viewing will be added to the enclosure.

Im wondering if the male polar bears are housed separately from the females for most of the year. Do they house Barle & Talini together?

The $1 million renovation of the 1920's lion grotto is complete, and with the filled-in moat and 17-foot high glass windows it will make for closer inspection of the zoo's 6 lions. The downside, in my opinion, is that the expanded habitat (which is what most American zoos call enclosures these days) is 7,500 sq. ft. while the viewing plaza is almost as large at 5,800 sq. ft. in size. Humans before cats?
