Detroit Zoo Detroit Zoo

I know the male Amur Tiger Viktor left Detroit Zoo a while ago to go to Beardsley, which is really nice because that's where he was born in the first place! I remember seeing him as a cub.:D

The zoos masterplan in the next ten years is to add snow leopards to the lions exhibit and to move the lions over by the giraffes. And add African leopards and other big cat species.

Hi team tapir, i think i saw you guys this morning. Were you the guy with your gf that asked me and my gf where we were coming from and we said pittsburgh and you said oh we like zoo were from cleveland. I can't believe i saw someone at a zoo that i chat to on here on a regular basis. There was a volunteer over by the Lions today and he said that the next couple of years they plan on having snow leopards in that exhibit and moving the lions over somewhere near the giraffes and they also plan on adding two more types of big cats. The volunteer said one other type would be African leopards and the other type of species would be named later. And the exhibit would be could Big cats.

I told Marty we need Team Tapir t-shirts!!! They actually have them on CafePress.com :) He thinks we are like Amur Tigers and we have to have, a large territory of zoos to roam :) Nice to meet you!!

We had a great time talking to all the volunteers today. Detroit does a great job of informing their docents. Everyone we talked to was so knowledgeable. We could have stayed all night and talked to them.

What do you think of Detroit? We love going there. It's one of our favorite "local" zoos. (I like any zoo that has free range peacocks!!! Thanks Pitts. too!) The Arctic Ring of Life is our favorite polar bear exhibit.
(Columbus runner up.) Did you happen to see the Harp seal in with the Harbor seals? He is the only one in a US zoo.
Did you see the Drills in with the Gorillas? Not too many zoos have Drills anymore. Its pretty cool that they get along with the Gorillas so well, but they have been with them for a while.

I uploaded some pics from today too. It's pretty funny that the first 4 people in the zoo this morning were Zoo Chatters :)

Take care,
Bonnie

I love that zoo. First time being there. I went to see our pittsburgh polar bear nuka :). And i liked how they had people telling you what's going on currently with the animals and history bout the zoo like you said detroit zoo does a good job on that. Yeah i saw the harp seal pup so cool. And i saw the drills and the baby chimp :). I wish i would've seen the bush dog and the pudu never seen one of them. and another thing too is that every single exhibit was big for each species of animal in them which gives it a plus in my mind.

I started another thread about the Belle Isle Zoo, and since it hasn't got much traffic I was wondering whether someone that participated in this thread had any information on it. I am looking for anything pictures, history behind it, what animal species lived there, pretty much anything about it. Thanks!

Years later, I see this post. This book by a former Detroit Zoo curator of education is a gold mine of info. [ame="http://www.amazon.com/The-First-Fifty-Years-Zoological/dp/B0006W1RAO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337073774&sr=8-1"]The First Fifty Years [/ame]

Construction is well under way on the zoos new beaver exhibit. The exhibit consists of three floating boardwalks which meet up at the actual beaver habitat. The boardwalks are set open this summer and the beaver habitat late fall/early winter.

The zoo is currently modifying its African Spurred Tortoise exhibit to become a outdoor exhibit for its Siamese Crocodiles.

Bonnie forgot her camera on this visit but took at few shots of the beaver exhibit construction we'll try to post them soon.

The zoos river otter triplets have gone on exhibit now that they have become good full time swimmers. They even got an award recognizing them as members of one of the local high school swim team.

Nice to see interest in native wildlife like river otters and Canadian beavers locally. Great that the Siamese crocs are getting an outdoor exhibit (would this be temperature controlled given their tropical clime at home?).

Where have the spurred tortoises gone to?

The spurred tortoise was still on exhibit while work was being done to the exhbit so not sure where they are moving to.As far as the crocodiles we are not sure about exactly how its going to work.

I looked at the new Detroit Zoo 2012 map and I saw that elands have now replaced the old wild dog exhibit. When did this happen and what kind of eland? I'm so excited that the zoo actually got another antelope species.
