Yes there are loads of confused emotions and needs expressed in America's gun culture that go way beyond the agrarian culture of hunting. Powerlessness is a huge factor. There is the political use of fear of crime, and thus there is a history of racism, there is certain groups feeling less important over the past 50 years and compensating by firing big weapons, there is the political use of that inadequacy, there is, above all, the NRA.Also it is shown not as a sign of death but a sign of power. In American culture many people seen with guns are seen as powerful people who can handle powerful weapons.
Where the French or Italians take to the streets as they have for centuries, Americans take up guns... as they have for centuries.
