Dogs and cats in zoos

Franklin Park Zoo has a cat in a barnyard exhibit. I can see why a cat would fit in there and it occurred to me that some people can't have pets at home and being able to see a cat at the zoo might be a good thing for them.

While Zoo Atlanta is now a world class facility, back in the 1960's, it left a lot to be desired.
I can clearly remember that their children's zoo had a dalmatian in a small chain link and concrete kennel with a sign that simply read, "DOG".

Adding to the already mentioned examples that I've seen in person:

- Cincinnati Zoo has a dog as a "Canine companion" for interacting with young animals and visitors
- Budapest Zoo keeps an old Mudi within its children zoo
- Hanover Zoo displays a Harzer Fuchs in their show
- Otterhounds are displayed at the Otter Centre at Hankensbüttel, Germany
- A Polski Owczarek Podhalanski is kept at the Wolf Centre in Dörverden, Germany
- Vyskov keeps Siberian cats in a mock "apartment room" exhibit.

Do Dingos and New Guinea Singing dogs also count as "domestic dogs"? If so, the list would be longer.

Dingoes don't, as most believe them to be genetically distinct enough to earn the title of being a subspecies. NGSDs might count.

I don't think my home zoo, Edinburgh zoo have them. The only dogs and cats are the one in exhibits

That sounds pretty cute. I think working cats are underrated. As for your point about pets, it would be pretty cool if the guests could interact with the animals. I really want a bird but I can't have one for a while, but if I go to a zoo that lets me feed lorikeets...

It seems fairly common for zoos to put domestic dogs with cheetahs sometimes. And, wasn't there a zoo that used a rescue dog to nurse some African wild dog pups? Though I don't know if she was put on display.

Last time I was in Dublin Zoo (admittedly this was nearly ten years ago, in 2004), it had domestic cats as an exhibit in its pets' corner, which I thought was pretty unusual.

Yes, Dublin Zoo has these in the farm section.
The dogs are especially used to take to old care or mental homes etc.

SeaWorld San Diego has a cat exhibit next to their Pets stadium for the inbetween times. It's a cute little exhibit that is a perfect representation of a living room with cat furniture, beds, etc.

In Columbus Zoo there are Labradors in the cheetah exhibit, and I think in San Diego they have dogs with the cheetahs too. I've seen a cat in Burgers' Zoo and La Barben, but they don't belong to the collection. The one in Burgers' Zoo is very friendly and you can interact with it. In Artis they had a cat who was well-known by regular visitors, but it passed away recently.

Singapore zoo has several dogs, which take part in the "animals friends show" many of them were rescued from the pound where they would have eventually faced euthanasia.

Indianapolis Zoo has Kangal dogs (similar to Anatolian Shepards) that they use for Cheetah chats, to talk about how the dogs are used in Africa to guard farmers' herds from cheetahs, so that the farmers don't feel the need to kill the cheetahs.

They also have an agility dog show, using domestic rescued dogs.
