Zoo Dresden Dresden Zoo news

The Lesser rhea male has hatched 2 chicks himself and later 11 chicks hatched at the incubator were placed succesfully with the male and the 2 chicks.

Bad news in Dresden : deaths of a baby two-toed sloth and a chinese giant salamander.

Hi, has anyone heard about a (historical) mixed exhibit with hyenas and vulture in Zoo Dresden? I have found that in a forum: "Die historische Dresdener Vergesellschaftung von Geiern mit Hyänen scheiterte ja einst auch nicht an den Geiern (keine Ahnung, ob darunter auch Kondore waren), sondern weil die Hyänen lernten, dass vollgefressene Geier schlecht im schnellen Auffliegen sind. "

At Dresden a new walk-through aviary is being build for the American flamingos from which they have a large breeding-colony ( about 70 animals ). This year already 6 chicks have hatched.
The Flamingos will share their new aviary ( 1550 square meter and up to 10 meter high ) with Roseate spoonbills and Scarlet ibisses.
Another large wading-bird was also succesfull in breeding : 3 Yellow-billed storks hatched :).

Has anyone been in Dresden recently ? (1-2 months)
DE website says houses are open again, while ENG website says they're all closed.
I want to trust the german version but maybe someone has been there and knows better.

I would suggest to set up an European wide thread for vulture reintroductions. The Sardinia project has a wider branch of zoos contributing ground stock.

My hometown zoo in Amsterdam - Artis Zoo has actually also made a significant contribution till now. I think this/next year only one chick will be added as a fledgling.

A planning permission has been submitted for the construction of a new orangutan facility.
The ten meters tall facility will cost 17.000.000 euros and the building works will start next summer.
The new exhibit will be home to Sumatran orangutans, binturongs, smooth-coated otter and Fidji banded iguanas. Moreover, the new Aldabra's giant tortoises house will be included in the new building.

That looks wonderful! I was in Dresden last summer and it's really an amazing little zoo. I thought that even though the orangutan enclosure was clearly showing its age, I've seen worse exhibits for them for sure.

The project is nice and the images are really envious.
The orangutan / otter double vision is pleasant.
I like the style of the fairly clean building. Orangutans seem to have access to the entire height of the aviary so that can be cool.

A good use of the current location.
