Zoo Dresden Dresden Zoo news

Recently a female South African bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis megalotis) arrived from GaiaZoo, she was paired to the already present male Attila. Due to her arrival the other male at zoo Dresden will soon move to Szeged zoo.

On the 18th of January a Great green macaw (Ara ambiguus) hatched.

After 6 months female Northern koala (Phascolarctos cinereus cinereus) Sydney returned to Zoo Dresden from Zoo Duisburg. She was send to Zoo Duisburg in the hopes of letting her mate with male Irwin, sadly this didn't result in offspring.

The 3 Aldabra giant tortoises (Aldabrachelys gigantea gigantea) have been moved to their winter enclosure behind the scenes. Next year they will be visible for the whole year in the new orangutan building.

On the 22nd of September 3 male and 5 female Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) arrived from Vogelpark Marlow. Zoo Dresden now has 17 Humboldt penguins.

Because of rising energy costs, the terrarium at Dresden will be closing earlier than anticipated. Originally it was planned to close with the opening of the new orangutan house next year, but the cost has forced an earlier closure. Some of the animals will remain at the zoo with others dispersed to other zoos and private keepers. Among the animals present in the building are green tree monitors, Australian freshwater crocodiles and snakes.

A joey has emerged from the female (Red?) Kangaroo RONJA.
Zoo-dresden on Instagram: "Im Beutel von Känguru-Weibchen Ronja gibt es einen kleinen Neuankömmling zu entdecken. Das Jungtier, dessen Geschlecht wir noch nicht wissen, kam im August 2022 zur Welt und steckt nun immer regelmäßiger sein Näschen aus dem Beutel. Kängurus werden nach einer kurzen Tragzeit von etwa 33 Tagen geboren. Dabei sind die neugeborenen Kängurus komplett nackt und nur 2,5 cm groß & 0,8 g schwer. Sie krabbeln selbstständig vom Geburtskanal in den Beutel und hängen sich an einer Zitze fest. Nach rund 5 bis 6 Monaten schauen sie erstmals raus. Ronjas Nachwuchs kam als unbemerktes „Mitbringsel“ aus ihrem früheren Zuhause, dem Opel-Zoo zu uns. Zusammen mit drei weiteren Weibchen und zwei schon selbstständigen Jungtieren zog Ronja im September 2022 in die neueröffnete Känguruanlage ein."
 
 
At least 2 Greater White Pelicans have hatched this spring in Dresde Zoo.
It's the first time the zoo manages to rear chicks of this species since 1987, when the zoo started to keep it.
Zoo-dresden on Instagram: "Pelikan-Nachwuchs im Zoo geschlüpft Dunkel und grau-schwarz statt hell und rosa-weiß ist das Gefieder der #Küken der #Rosapelikane. Damit unterscheiden sich die Kleinen deutlich von den Großen, sind aber auch unter dem schützenden Bauch der Eltern im Nest schwerer zu erkennen. Selbst die Haut im Gesicht, der Schnabel und der Kehlsack sind komplett dunkel und färben sich erst im Laufe der ersten zwei Lebensjahre um. Für uns ist es ein großer Erfolg, dass es nun das zweite Jahr in Folge mit dem Nachwuchs klappt, denn darauf warten wir bereits Jahrzehnte. Seit 1987 leben Rosapelikane im Zoo und obwohl es immer auch mal zur Eiablage kam, schlüpfte nie ein Jungvogel. Die Eier waren entweder unbefruchtet, wurden von den Krähen geholt oder die Pelikane brüteten nie bis zum Schlupf aus. Jetzt scheint der Knoten geplatzt und aktuell sind zwei Jungvögel von zwei verschiedenen Elternpaaren auf der Brutplattform zu sehen. Weiterer Nachwuchs wäre möglich, denn einige Pelikane brüten noch auf ihren Eiern."
