Dublin Zoo Dublin Zoo news thread

I was recently told a tigress by the name of Niamh passed away at Dublin zoo by an acquaintance from outside of zoochat. The tiger in question apparently had Bengal genes and might have previously been kept in the smaller exhibit next to the current tiger exhibit (apparently this exhibit has kept wolves and tapirs in the past too). He provided a photo of the specimen in question (attached below credit goes to the owner ofc). Would anyone here have any knowledge about this supposed tiger or confirm/deny its existence?

There was a tigress who looked rather old present on my last visit. Believe it was kept in the exhibit beside the lions. Could be wrong on that though.

I was at Dublin Zoo today, had a nice visit despite the rainy weather. I spoke to a volunteer asking about what the next development is after the Himalayan Hills. He said that they are planning to move the lions into where the Amur tigers normally live (where I observed some construction works), while the tigers are in the former Sumatran tiger enclosure next to the dholes. Once the lions move in there, then their enclosure will become the tigers'. He said they hope this will be finished by July. I initially felt that this wouldn't really give more space to the lions, but from comparing the size of both enclosures on Google Earth, it seems it will give a bit more space to them (the Amur tigers' enclosure is a little bit larger than the lions' enclosure). And who knows, the old Sumatran tiger enclosure might become part of the Amurs' new area.

Rte are showing 3 one hour "live" shows yesterday, today and 2moro at 7pm. They are/were badly advertised (nothing on the zoo website) and I just chanced on the show yesterday when flicking through the channels. I have just finished watching tonights show and it left me disappointed. Its a new format (a bit like springwatch) but has very little animal footage and mostly keepers and celebritys chatting about education and conservation. They do show some archive footage and photos and this makes it a worthwhile watch.

I have just watched tonight's show again and this time without distraction, and would revise my opinion and say it's actually very good. It shows some good behind the scenes clips and footage of animals breaking into the zoo. A badger got into the ostrich habitat and stole a huge egg which he proceeded to roll onto rocks to break, amazing to see.
Also on 2moros episode the new director will be there to speak of future developments.

On a different note.
I was at the zoo recently and heard that the young female Okapi had moved to another zoo.

Re: elderly tiger Niamh. There were three Amur Tigers born at Edinburgh on 18 March 2004 and the two females from that litter were moved to Dublin on 7 September 2004. Originally named Shilka and Zeya they were renamed Alice and Niamh. I believe Alice died in 2016, but as is the way with many zoos Dublin have never mentioned it.

Haven’t caught up on last nights episode yet but I haven’t seen more than one ostrich in a few visits. On my last visit on Saturday I saw none. Is there still some left?

Yes, I would be surprised if they stopped keeping ostriches, so I imagine new ones will be brought in later. I have heard of lots of potential new exhibits and species, so it will be interesting to hear what the director has to say on the tv interview tonight.
I saw that there was foundations going in at the end of the Okapi enclosure and also work on the painted dog enclosure as it seems the dogs are fighting and need means of separating when necessary.

Any news coming away from the interview with the new zoo director for the episode June 9th?
(Unfortunately Continentals cannot Watch the zoo episodes due to rights issues)

What ostrich species have they been keeping (will lthey switch to North African red or Somali blue - both endangered)?

They won’t be keeping ostrich in the future according to a keeper.

The interviewer only asked bland questions so there was nothing noteworthy discussed.

Had my first ever visit to Dublin zoo yesterday and I have to say I was really impressed! It’s now probably my favourite city zoo in the UK & Ireland (out of the ones I have been too).

I loved the ape enclosures, they’re the most natural looking ape enclosures I have ever seen, and it was awesome to see one of the orangutans climb over the pathway :D

The dholes were out and active which was nice to see, as this was the first time I had seen this species.

The new snow leopard and red panda enclosures were really nice and, again, natural looking. I saw 4 red pandas in total, two of which were at the top of the large tree in the left hand enclosure.

One of the Sulawesi crested macaques was playing with a window squeegee, don’t think she was meant to have it, but nevertheless was loving it lol

I was unable to get a good view of the elephant enclosure (why are the paths around their enclosure so small for such a popular animal!?) it was very busy meaning I couldn’t stop to get a good look, but from what I saw, the enclosure was nice and the elephants were enjoying the water.

I’m hoping to go back later this year (when it won’t be so busy!) :D
