Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoo News 2022

Great to see the Orangutans Djimat, Jazz and Sprout enjoying their new enclosure. It's funny all those logs for climbing, but the best things are the weeds that are growing quicker than the new grass :-)

I don't think so. They changed the plan. Would have been great to get those two together. It works so well at Chester Zoo.

They're in.

Can't quite believe the day is finally here but Dudley's new orangutan outdoor enclosure is officially complete and the zoo's four Bornean orangs have been exploring their fantastic new space.

The zoo says that seeing them step over the threshold was a very emotional moment for staff and describe the new area as life-changing for their orangs. I'd agree, it must also have been completely mind-blowing for each one of them...

Benji (b. 1977), who joined the zoo in 1996, has spent most of his time at Dudley living in one of the worst orangutan outdoor enclosures in Europe.

Jazz has lived in the other original outdoor area at Dudley all her life since being born at the zoo in 1991 and the same goes for her daughter Sprout who has lived at the zoo since her birth in 2011.

Dudley's terrible old outdoor areas are all these 3 orangs have known for decades. Their idea of the world around them must have completely changed.

In addition, 33-year-old male Djimat, who joined the zoo only last year, arrived from equally terrible outdoor facilities at Aalborg Zoo in Denmark.

This new outdoor area marks a red letter day for Dudley Zoo and their stunning red apes.

The zoo also says they will now turn to redeveloping and combining the original outdoor space.

i think that this new orang enclosure is amazing. how will this work though with the current orangs. im presuming that Benji is still living on his own and the other 3 are together. will this mean that the 2 groups will have to rotate for use of the outdoor enclosure. how do the orangs access this new outdoor space. and is the old outdoor area going to be renovated as a new outdoor space or will it be an extension of the indoor housing

Hi all, does anyone know if the train in the zoo is running?

No reason why it wouldn't be.

Correct.

will this mean that the 2 groups will have to rotate for use of the outdoor enclosure.

Yes.

how do the orangs access this new outdoor space.

Via a new access tunnel.

is the old outdoor area going to be renovated as a new outdoor space or will it be an extension of the indoor housing

All we know is that the zoo plan to redevelop and combine the original outdoor areas.

If only that was true :( there's significantly worse around!

Fairly busy day at the Zoo 1/6/22

Most animals pretty active. Benji wasn't making use of the new enclosure and appeared to be sulking in the rear corner of his indoor den. No straw on the floors I noticed, I wondered if it was to encourage them outside. The other 3 were all together in their old outdoor enclosure.

Keepers were trying to sex the baby Anteater, it only got off its Moms back briefly for some yoghurt then quickly got back on.

The Snowy Owl enclosure was being demolished, after speaking with the workmen they said they would be rebuilding for a new pair of Snowys and then after that they would be starting work on anew enclosure for Wild Dogs at the bottom of the zoo. Not sure how true that is, but interesting all the same.

Wolverine very active great to see one for the 1st time.

Ring tail Lemurs off show for treatment. The Black and White Ruffed Lemurs were being treated to a Jubilee picnic for a photoshoot. As was the female Snow Leapord, but she showed much less interest.

Saw 2 pairs of penguins. Female Lions active, but are looking their years now. Capuchin monkeys extremely playful, having great fun in a old sheet hammock.

Was my 1st visit since all Covid restrictions totally lifted, great to see the Zoo back to normal and busy :)
