A baby Linne's two-toed sloth was born on 5th June. It is the third baby for Reggie and Flo. It hasn't been sexed yet.

I wonder, what will be their old enclosure be used for ?The entire White Lipped Peccary group (of seven) have been moved down to Dartmoor. Dudley no longer hold the species

While I am genuinely surprised, and a bit sad to see a rarity of Dudley's leave the collection... what will happen to these two enclosures now, because the Reindeer also moved down to the former bear ravine. The entire White Lipped Peccary group (of seven) have been moved down to Dartmoor. Could they be combined for a bear habitat? While I am genuinely surprised, and a bit sad to see a rarity of Dudley's leave the collection... what will happen to these two enclosures now, because the Reindeer also moved down to the former bear ravine.
During my time at Dudley During the early 1990s they certainly weren't there then ,Collared Peccaries were and had been kept at Dudley from at least the early 1980sThe White-lipped Peccaries have(or rather had) been at Dudley for as long as I can remember, even going back as far as the 1960's. I am not sure however if it has been a continuous run with the same group. I also wonder if they are now extremely inbred, being the only ones in the UK, or whether unrelated ones were sourced from elsewhere. Did Cotwold WP also keep this species at one stage? Presumably Dudley have now decided they don't want to keep the species anymore and Dartmoor offered to take on this unusual group.

I believe Dudley have had White-lipped for a long time- if not from late 60's, maybe it was 1970's.But the news item says they had them just for the last 15 years. Maybe zoochat can establish a timeline of exactly when they kept them from.Back in the 1960s/70s, I believe Dudley held Collared Peccaries rather than White-lipped.
Bad news about the bears, obvious I suppose with the Reindeer moving there, I was looking forward to one day seeing bears in the ravine once againHad a lovely day at DZC today. Several coachloads of school children arrived at the same time as I did but, fortunately, I managed to avoid them for most of the time. It is the first time I've visited DZC since the Hippodrome next door had been demolished and Castle Hill looks quite different without it (I know it was an eyesore, but I miss it somehow as its presence is inextricably linked to my visits to DZC over a number of decades).
I really liked the new bush dog enclosure which was still being developed on my last visit. I managed to get good views of the bush dogs - something I have struggled with previously. I thought the extension to the giraffe paddock looked a little sterile although I could see that there were plenty of points for browse to be hung up. Neither of the giraffes were using it.
The Arctic fox cubs were very sweet and very playful and I was delighted to get a good view of the baby sloth. The new reindeer enclosure looks very good - it is aesthetically pleasing and very spacious. Refurbishment of the old reindeer enclosure is already underway (pictures in the gallery). I asked a keeper what was going to happen to it and to the peccary enclosure and they either didn't know or weren't allowed to say. I also asked about bears - sadly, they are no longer in the plan (I think due to the financial hit caused by Covid).
I was thrilled to see a sloth and the youngest anteater in their outdoor enclosures - the first time I have seen either of these species outdoors at DZC.
My thoughts as well... I know they're not an easy species to look after in captivity, and as someone who's never seen Brown bears in person I would've loved to see them (or even Wolves) at Dudley.Bad news about the bears, obvious I suppose with the Reindeer moving there, I was looking forward to one day seeing bears in the ravine once again

Also, judging by the new fencing around the ex-Reindeer exhibit... could it possible to hold Cheetah? Probably something that isn't too big but also could benefit from that space leading from there to the Orangutans.
Whatever they decide to house in that area will have to be very Hardy, because when the winter winds howl across there, can nearly knock you off your feetYes, it's a real shame about the bears - I have so many memories of watching them at Dudley as a child and wolves too (where the Farm Barn is now). Hard to tell what will go in the old reindeer exhibit at this stage and it's not clear whether they will extend it into the old peccary enclosure or not. I would have thought it was a bit too exposed for cheetah unless they do a lot of planting. I wondered about an ungulate - it would be nice to see zebra at DZC again but they would presumably need to remove the gravel and lay turf. I'd love to have clouded leopards in there - a species I've never seen.
Just checking some of my Dudley guidebooks and I have found white lipped Peccaries in a 1966/1967 guidebook. The timescale of white lipped Peccaries arriving 15 years ago sounds about right to meI believe Dudley have had White-lipped for a long time- if not from late 60's, maybe it was 1970's.But the news item says they had them just for the last 15 years. Cheetahs used to be housed during the 1950s to middle of 1960's approximately where the snow leopards are nowYes, it's a real shame about the bears - I have so many memories of watching them at Dudley as a child and wolves too (where the Farm Barn is now). So they did have then back then? But not continuously since if they only had them more recentlyJust checking some of my Dudley guidebooks and I have found white lipped Peccaries in a 1966/1967 guidebook. The timescale of white lipped Peccaries arriving 15 years ago sounds about right to me
