It’s looking very nice, as good as the previous setup was this is definitely an improvement. It seems Dudley is employing a Chester-like ‘always building’ strategy these last few years, which is always delightful to keep up with and so good to see improvements being made all the time.

I find it interesting that where other major zoos have de-prioritised domestic reindeer [on grounds of being difficult to breed, specialised feeding, essentially a domestic...] Dudley and Blackpool remain strong with them.
Not that I have anything against it - good for them. Nice species to have.
Exhibit looks nice enough for an animal of the barren ground

According to Clinton Keeling, they had success in breeding White Lipped Peccaries.
Dudley was well known in zoo circles for having the White lipped peccaries. I am presuming it is descendents
of the original group that have finally left to go to Dartmoor. May be very inbred by now unless unrelated stock added somewhere along the line which I think might be less likely

The original group from the 1960's were fazed out due to inbreeding. As far as the more recent group that have been sent to Dartmoor, I have no current information about those

The group of white lipped peccary sent to Dartmoor are all from the group previously held by cwp, and have no connection to any previously held by Dudley that I know of if they are it's very very distant relationship.

The White-lipped Peccaries have(or rather had) been at Dudley for as long as I can remember, even going back as far as the 1960's...

Dudley Zoo successfully bred white-lipped peccaries in 1964 - sixty years ago. I think this was the first UK birth of the species.

Yes, Dudley's most recent group of white-lipped peccaries were originally a group of 9 (5 castrated males and 4 females) that came from Cotswold Wildlife Park.

I recall reading that collared peccary were present and successfully bred at the zoo as far back as the early 1970s.

I was sure that they had them as far back as then. I don't know what happened to that original group though, was it the same as the one that was later at Cotswold WP? Seems unlikely Cotswold would import some seperately? In which case it was the same group throughout from 1960's- present day. But that may not be correct of course. I would like to know though.

Can’t notice it! Looks like it might be a walkthrough exhibit with that path?
No, if you look carefully its a public path that leads just down to the (black) fence. Then the large gravelled 'path' area within their enclosure will be hardstand areas for this 'tundra' species. It looks to be a good use of the old Bear ravine though.

Are we still in the dark on the reindeer/peccary area? It seems that the two areas are both being done together and presumably are going to be one enclosure. Thick chain link is going up, thicker than in the primate enclosures, so I’m thinking carnivore?

I’ve attached a photo of the fencing, it also goes under the ground so I guess something that might dig, that’s probably most things though!

There’s also a company there called Aquascapes waterfalls landscaping. I took a photo of their trailer but I don’t think you can tell anything from it. I’m guessing something that will use a water feature.

Does that rule out the wild dogs and cheetah mentioned earlier in the thread?
