Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoo news 2025

"The new chimpanzee fencing is really great to see. I just hope they've kept the enclosure the same size."

As far as I can recall from my visit in July, the enclosure has the same footprint as previously - they've just replaced the old fencing.

I wonder if this new fencing is strong enough that they could keep males in future? Looks a bit like that e.g. MonkeyWorld and they have plenty of males. Its just a thought possibly ?

What sad news, he was a stunning cat. The keepers and staff must be really upset.

He really was...some animals are a 'wow' and I had just that moment the first time I saw him and I imagine he delighted loads of visitors the same way. I visited once when they were doing a tiger talk and sponsored run around the zoo etc with a big stand just outside the enclosure (which both tigers went up the bank to see and stared at, a lot, offering excellent views) and the team spoke so passionately about conservation and the Sumatran tiger, the whole thing was a credit to the zoo.

João news - Dudley Zoo and Castle

Incredibly sad news. Joao was probably the most impressive big cat I've ever seen. Huge and very thick-set, but a gentle giant.

Joao was born on 28th March 2012 at Krefeld Zoo, Germany, to Sutera and Beludra, and arrived at Dudley Zoo on 14th November 2013. Hard to believe he'd been at Dudley for nearly 12 years.

Joao and Daseep were a very striking and compatible pair. It's such a shame they were never able to produce offspring.

Sad times.

Did Joao ever father cubs with another female? Shame the pairing with Daseep didn't result in offspring

its been a dreadful 2 weeks for tiger deaths. with the loss of the white one at west mid and the white one at smarden as well. there are so many zoos now with the odd one here and there so not much chance of breeding in a lot of places

I'm being pedantic, but from the photo above it looks as though they've squared off the funnel-shaped part of the outdoor area that led indoors, i.e. the bit on your right as you look out the main outdoor viewing area.

I don't mind that though if that's the case, as it gives them the space to extend the indoor area in the future if they want. Just as long as the rest of the outdoor area is the same size.

BTW does anyone know if the main outdoor viewing area has been rebuilt- the windows look smaller than previously?

Visited today, chilly but rather busy day. Most animals out and about. Lots of highlights. Wolverines really active and playfull in new pool, could watch for hours. Bushdogs showing really well, and the babies really cute, all making good use of entire enclosure.
Painted dogs area looking a bit more lived in now i personally think it's a fantastic looking enclosure. They were all inside.
Gibbons not in their enclosure, all signage taken down and shutters also down. I asked a keeper and they said that they had been moved to down to bottom of the zoo by chinps in the Howler Monkey enclosure. There was no sign of the gibbons in, there it looked empty (both indoors and out).
I did see that the Howler Monkeys have been moved into the Primate House though (without signage btw).
Had a good look at the Male Lion and he was vocalising lots and is impressive, unfortunately the female wasnt quite as interested.
Daseep lookes as amazing as always ❤.
Chimp outdoor area still under active construction, new climbing frames and new fence looking good.
No shows: Sloths, Civet, Lynx, Painted Dogs, Red Panda.

Interesting.. I wonder if they're preparing to move the Gibbons into the area with the Orangs as I think Benosaurus or someone else mentioned that happening at some point.

Don't get your hopes up but I always thought that Howler enclosure near the chimps could look better for something like a Fossa (given enough coverage).

We went August 31st, and it already looked like she could be?

And given that the gestation period for African wild dogs is 2 to 3 months, if she was indeed pregnant in August then she could be due to give birth very soon.

Hopefully all goes well.
