Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoo news 2025

@Angel does the new fencing look much different than the original or is it too early to say? I hope they do something similar to the new orang enclosure fence.

Yes, the new fencing has the green metal sheeting at the top, the same as the orang outdoor enclosure. I didn't really take in whether the fencing itself was the same as previously or not. It certainly looked robust and, with the metal sheeting on top, looked slightly taller than the original.

Sad news from DZC - one of the new female painted dogs has passed away. Statement on their Facebook page:

We are saddened to share the news that Alice, one of our new female painted dogs passed away last night.
We welcomed the eight-year-old to Dudley Zoo, alongside her daughter Isabel, just over a month ago from Germany, to form our first breeding pack with males, Walter and Bruce.
Over these past few weeks, the four dogs had integrated well, but Alice had been under veterinary care for underlying health issues after keepers observed a deterioration in recent days.
Sadly, yesterday evening, Alice suddenly became unresponsive in her den and with her welfare remaining our top priority and following consultations with the veterinary team, keepers made the kindest decision to put her to sleep.
The loss of any animal on site is always difficult for staff, no matter how long they have been in our care for.
Our dedicated carnivore team will continue closely monitoring the remaining dogs as they readjust to their new pack hierarchy.

They could do either. I really don't know what they plan to do after the current group are phased out.
Seems like a question for a lot of zoos at the moment with chimps, but I atleast haven’t seen a new group been formed at any zoo in the uk for a while (to my knowledge)

6.5K views · 100 reactions | We’ve had a timely arrival – a new colony of leaf-cutter ants, who are here just in time to help us mark Insect Week! Celebrated annually by the Royal Entomological Society, the event, which runs until June 29, aims to raise awareness about insects and how important they are to our eco-system. And leaf-cutter ants are a fascinating species to learn more about. Each colony has a hierarchy, made up of minims, minors, mediae, majors and the Queen, with all members having a specific role to play – you’ll be able to spot some in the video, captured by our keepers. Make sure you head to our indoor chimp viewing area, where they’re located. There are around 4,000 ants in the new colony, so stop and watch as they go about their work! | Dudley Zoo

Just got back from the zoo, had a lovely day all I have to report on is:
1) bush dogs were very active as always
2) new signage before you enter the bats
3) lights were of in the 1st bat enclosure and the 2nd was blocked off and possibly being renovated
4) the African wild dog enclosure was lovely and they were relatively active
5) the chimpanzee enclosure was coming along nicely and looked close to being completed.

The new chimpanzee fencing is really great to see. I just hope they've kept the enclosure the same size.

"The new chimpanzee fencing is really great to see. I just hope they've kept the enclosure the same size."

As far as I can recall from my visit in July, the enclosure has the same footprint as previously - they've just replaced the old fencing.

Years ago when I visited Dudley, I'm sure there was another enclosure further back from the chimps (on your right), located next to the former red squirrel cages (now the Black lemur exhibit) and it used to hold Prairie dogs until 2009-ish.

I wonder if they have any plans to change up that enclosure and add in a new species?

Yes, there was an enclosure there - the last animals I remember seeing in there were giant rabbits which I think was around 2012-3. From what I remember, it wasn't particularly large and had a concrete floor so not sure what species it could be reused for.

We visited on Sunday. Starting off with both Wolverine pups running around while dad was sleeping on his back (as per usual really, lol).
2 of the Bush Dog pups were play fighting with all the older ones looking at it.

Unfortunately both Brown Lemurs are gone :( one passed away a few months ago, and another recently moved to somewhere else, it sounded like somewhere where he could just live out the rest of his days kind of thing.
Gutted to hear, they were my favorites. I did wonder where the other one was last time I went, but didn't think anything of it really.

Once again had to tell keepers people were feeding animals, this time the Giraffes. Fully leaning over the fencing feeding them bamboo sticks. Oh how I wished they would have gotten pulled in, or just fell down...

All 3 Painted Dogs good visible, of which one of the males kept rolling around constantly for about 10 minutes (to which many people looking kept saying "does he have flees??", it may have looked like he was trying to scratch, there were keepers looking from the other side, I'm sure it's all good), it was a bit of an odd sight I suppose? I'd never seen a Painted Dog doing that.

We went back to the Bush Dogs and we then saw all the puppies playing outside, so are just too cute! Some of the older ones were messing about around the water, pushing each other in.

Dudley zoo have just posted on FB their male Tiger has passed :(
Official statement from the Zoo via their FB:

We are heartbroken to have to share that our majestic Sumatran tiger, João, has passed away.
We’ve cared for the 13-year-old since 2013, when he arrived from Krefeld Zoo in Germany to join our resident female, Daseep.
Although João had recently been receiving veterinary care for an underlying issue, his health deteriorated suddenly over the weekend and despite intensive treatment, he sadly passed away in the early hours of yesterday (Monday) morning.

I just saw it. What terrible news this morning.

What sad news, he was a stunning cat. The keepers and staff must be really upset.
