Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoo news 2025

I thought the double orang births, as well as the litter of Arctic foxes and multiple baby sloths would have had a far greater impact. Not to mention the arrival of species such as cassowary and wolverines over the last few years.

This is likely down insufficient self promotion, however that is something that costs money which the zoo must budget for when required.

I think that now the zoo has broken the back of improving the animal side of things, they are now starting to address visitor facilities and being more attractive to families. Things like more picnic areas and children's play areas popping up (thankfully without diminishing the animal attractions too much). There's also the new visitor's centre and plans to restore the Queen Mary restaurant and Moat Café in the pipeline.

When you say restore the Queen Mary restaurant, has it been closed down ? I would imagine work on the Moat Cafe will be expensive, good news nevertheless.

It hasn't closed down. Refurbish is a better word. I wrote about it in my last end-of-year summary...

I also wrote about the planned visitor's centre here...

on my last visit a few years ago I hardly saw another soul.

A few suggestions; Its not a wealthy area, its not on any tourist trail, its very steep-going. Its big plus is that its centred in a huge conurbation, but I suspect many West Midlanders who want a 'day out at the zoo' prefer to head out into the country instead and go to WMSP or Twycross, both country locations. Just some ideas.

I think I recall your last visit was a dark Autumn/Winter day. All places' visitor numbers suffer in the 'off-seasons', but I completely agree that on a nice summers day I imagine a lot of people prefer to travel out of the town rather than pop down the road. So unfortunately, if that's the case, it's a lose-lose for Dudley, whose populous urban location may actually be to its disadvantage. However, the zoo is still managing to hold its own and improve even though its visitor numbers are nowhere near what we initially might expect.

it’s a bit of a hassle to get to given the minimum 1/2 hour walk from the nearest train station

That's true, but don't forget a large new metro station has been built roughly 100 metres from the zoo's entrance. It's due to open to passengers in the Autumn of this year and will link to central Wolverhampton, Birmingham, and Merry Hell Shopping Centre...

32.5% of their 163 species being ranked as threatened (Vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered) seems quite low and poor to me? Or is that unfair? Would be interesting compare to other zoos of a similar size.

Its true my last visit was a winter one. I should have added that fact to give a better appraisal. Obviously its not like that in summer or even spring/autumn either.

I see they are calling the station Dudley castle, not Dudley zoo or Dudley zoo and castle would think this would be an obvious way to promote, remind locals of the existence if they have a say in the matter

I agree ....fully here! Perhaps the zoo management could talk to the local Council and the public transport operation!!!!

Had a fun day at Dudley today. No one had received the memo about not visiting the zoo it seemed and it was really busy. The construction outside the zoo continues at pace. Despite the large number of people there were still some quiet spots and people spread around the site.

Didn't catch sight of the Wolverine kits but did see Helga and the male Floki engaged in some noisy mating in the shelter box. Helga saw Floki off after the mating was over and some chasing ensued. Dudley having signage that's at least 10ft high didn't stop the Wolverines being variously labelled Bears, Wolves, Skunks and Red Pandas as I stood there, but the informative talk helped those who attended it identify them.

There was an 'animal under veterinary care' sign up at the tiger enclosure and Joao the male Sumatran tiger had a visible healing wound low down on his left side but was wandering about and actively jumping onto the platforms.

Was great to see the Bushdog family with pups outside enjoying the sunshine and I also got lucky with the Orang family having the day access to the large climbing enclosure, offering great views. There was a talk and feed too, quite the treat. Was nice to see the (new to me) aviary next to the Orang house occupied by Green Aracari and a few other updates since I was last there with renewed fencing for the Spider Monkeys and outside enclosure renewal for the Coppery Titi Monkeys.

Some aviary swaps had also gone on since my last visit, with the Violet Turaco moving from the aviaries near the Wolverines to the updated bird area opposite the sloths, now sharing with the Palawan Peacock Pheasant. Indian Peafowl now in the old aviary. Much improved views of the Turaco as a result Some nice bird mixes continue in the refurbished aviaries including some Black Headed Weavers (which I don't recall being in the large aviary last time); they were busy getting their breeding plumage on.

In the neighbouring aviary were Red Billed Pintail, Baikal Teal, Satyr Tragopan, Mindano Bleeding Heart Dove and Bali Starling. So some nice birds to look at and not busy there. The Lorikeet walkthrough area was closed, assume for bird flu precautions.

The Painted Dog area looks to be well under way now with landscaping and what look like final touches going in including a large water feature and holding area outside the house. Popped some pictures in the gallery including some panos to show the space such as the left hand area below. Hopefully the planting will allow for space to hide in the end.

On a travel related note (nothing to do with the zoo of course) two of the EV charging sites nearest to the zoo have had all their cables nicked / chainsawed off and are now unusable. Shame to see. Newer charging on the M5 South at Frankley though, for those seeking electricity on the move.

We went today too and I was basically going to type the exact same thing you already typed, lol.

We must have been at the Wolverines at the same times and quite close to each other, because I heard most of those things too! We saw the mating too, but they were on the ground and some keepers were keeping an eye out on them. There'll be more kits soon while the first litter isn't fully grown yet, lol.

Another fun one, when a Saki Monkey showed it's face "oh look, there's the Sloth!".

There was also a bunch of new signs, some extra ones (something about Winter trails?) and some older signs were replaced with newer ones, bit of a new more modern lay-out.

It opened at 9.45 am today due to the expected busyness (what the woman at the till told us).
I don't think I've seen it this busy before in the past 3 years, but then again, Mothers Day AND such nice weather.
Crowds were very friendly I must say, I've experienced very differently there during busy periods.

Sadly no Lemurs out and about, there was a sign up that they aren't free roaming.
My last visit was either July or September last year with a pass that would end in November.
I didn't think I was going to get another one anytime soon as I had to quit my job and being careful with money, but then today decided to get one again because it's going to get me out of the house until I find another job, as I am going insane not having much to do. I'm sure it was a good decision, hehe.

Sounds like it was also a good day out and it's a good thing to do to get out and about.

We were probably at the Wolverines around the same time. It's always a thing to wonder if there are zoo nerds around! I'd completely forgotten it was Mother's day, that explains the loads of people (coupled with the great weather) though I agree everyone was polite, there was no shoving even in the busy places and kids were generally not screaming. Good mood weather day all round! The new signage does look smart.

Yeah, I always walk around thinking if there are any other ZooChatters around, lol. I think the both of us have already been at Dudley and Hamerton on the same day without knowing.

Echo this. Massive own goal if they haven't even tried..

The zoo have announced that Matt Lewis is the new Director, Matt was previously the zoo manager. Matt started at Dudley many years ago as a trainee bird keeper. I first met him in 1991 and he will, in my opinion be the perfect replacement for the out going Derek Grove, I wish him all the very best.

I thoroughly agree. Very pleased Matt Lewis has been appointed the role. He's the first person who sprang to mind when I learnt Derek Grove was retiring.

Having worked at Dudley Zoo for 36 years, Matt is hugely experienced and dedicated, and will know the place like the back of his hand. He also has the advantage of having worked with Derek whilst he was Director, so will be able to pick up where he left off. Wish him all the best.

In the 1980s British Rail had a locomotive named Dudley Castle. I was puzzled as to why the name was not Dudley Zoo and Castle. I've heard a lot of people say they've been to Dudley Zoo, I have never heard anyone call the place Dudley Castle.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but does anyone know where the new African painted/wild dogs will be coming from, or how many there'll be?

The zoo's breeding male reindeer, Kenny, who joined the zoo in 2021, has moved to Cotswold Wildlife Park.

His impressive set of antlers that dropped just before Christmas will be mounted in the farm barn.

Look forward to seeing him there, the herd has been getting a little reduced in recent times so perhaps this will mean some more youngsters.

Always nice to see a home grown talent who has come up through the ranks by hard work and blood, sweat and tears ... and makes the place even better than before (and knows all the ins and outs of the Zoo ...).
