Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoological Gardens in 2010

Real shame about the Dudley Giraffe deaths , they had a nice little group . I would guess that , over the years , the number of Giraffe births in the UK are offset by at least an equal number of deaths , quite a tricky species to manage .

Clementine passed away on 15 / 05 / 2010 she was five and half years old
Korah passed away on 30 / 05 / 2010 she was 16 years old.
This was very sad news coming not long after the death of Lily the baby Gibbon
It is very sad news abot Bam if they are down to 3.0 then I will try and find out what has happened to anotherr one of the males as there were 5.0 at the start of the year
Going on Tuesday are there any questions or photographs anyone would like me to get.

Do you know what the purpose of this move was? Twycross list 1.1 Babirusa, so presumably this leaves Twycross with 1.0? Aside from South Lakes and Chester, I don't believe there are any female Babirusa left in the UK of breeding age. So I'm confused as to why the move between Twycross and Dudley was done, unless Dudley's male shows more interest in mating and there is a slim chance of a resulting pregancy.

Twycross currently have no Babirusa the male passed away about a month ago,but there are plans to bring in a new pair before the end of the year.

About the snow leopard - I've heard there will not be a new female because the incident with Tangra was the second time it had happened with him.

Will ask about the Snow Leopard just to confirm.
Will also be trying to get photographs of the animals that they keep at the zoo that are not already in the gallery as there are one or two (list is in the forums under - missing animals)
I will also be trying to include the species in the Discovery Centre which there are quite a few in this weeks trip.

It would be nice to know how giraffe Keyah is coping without Korah and Clementine especially as Sophie has only recently left too.

Will ask about the giraffes as well, just recieved E-Mail from Dudley Zoo there appears to be 5 Meerkat pups and all are doing fine.
After sending in some photographs of the Meerkat pups they have now been passed on to the press department so hope this brings in the a few more members of the public to the zoo.

QUOTE {I understand that Dudley are waiting to see if they can use the land just past the chimps (A very large paddock about 20 times the size they are in now) for a new Giraffe/mixed enclosure but do agree that both zoos could do with a bit of updating as far as the Giraffes go}UNQUOTE

That would seem like a good/wise development. I do think it could be done in-house (given the current lack of finance) and with lots of public support. Any idea which other species would be foreseen for this mixed - supposedly African savannah - themed exhibit?

Twiglet2010 I don't know when you last visited but it's been a very long time since Dudley actually kept a Leopards
As for the keeper of the Chimps then are you really sure that the person you spoke to was a keeper and not a zoo volunteer, as the Head keepers I know can tell the chimps apart very easily and have worked with the chimps since the day they arrived at the zoo. Most keepers other than Head Keepers are rotated around the zoo on a 6 months basic, so the person you spoke to may have been at the zoo for 3 years but had they been working with the Chimps all that time.
As for the Orangs not moving I could actually come on here and tear Twycross apart for the same reason.
All I can say is £13.00 and out side in 2 hours bored stiff, I did not come on here and use written language like c--- to describe your zoo or any other zoo.
I understand that people have different opinions on each zoo and we can't all agree on everything as the world would be a boring place if we did.
But a constructive explanation as to why you don't like the zoo would have been more appropiate then just slagging off the zoo.

I think saying the zoo needs all the money it can get for improvements, then having the check to pay childs entrance says it all!
I wasn't going to be rude, so I'll just say if you don't like the zoo, just don't go, I'm sure they wont miss your £7 or whatever price you blagged to get in.

Well said.

People that complain about a collection like that who then have the cheek to COMMIT FRAUD just because they didn`t like the price of admission really are the lowest of the low as far as I`m concerned.

As bad as the people you see raiding the stuff left outside of charity shops on a sunday morning, you should be ashamed!

It is effectively stealing from a charity!

Somewhat flabbergasted re. the outburst of one vs. a given zoo. Right, if you do not like the place, why bothering coming over at all. And committing fraud ... says it all really? Change the world, start by oneself first, I say!

Back on topic: any ideas how Dudley will move forward with the giraffe/mixed exhibit plan? Any ideas or budding zoo plans ready for public consumption?

I went to Dudley zoo today and found that the only remaining female giraffe, Keyah, died last week. I think she was only 2 years old. That leaves the new male on his own. Had this sad news been posted before? I sometimes miss some of the comments?

What happend to Keyah? :( it's a massive blow for Dudley, losing 0:4 Giraffe in just a few months.....

Yes it's true she died in the night 23/24 August, not sure yet exactly of what but it's feared it could be a breeding thing as her sister died earlier this year of kidney failure.
Will try and update after next visit 8th September
