Were the Dudley giraffes now pure-breds? Where did they all originate from? What is the cause of death in the other 3 females?

At the start of this year Dudley had 0:1 hybrid and 0:3 pure rothschild

In May Clementine died due to Kidney Faliure. A week later her daughter Korah died overnight and a later postmortem found that she had an abnormally small heart. Sophie the hybrid left for Blair Drummond in June. Leaving Keyah and and the new bull Kubwah. Now Keyah has died they just have Kubwah who came from South Lakes in april

Been a hard few months for Dudley's giraffe keepers :( Rip to Korah, Clemintine and now Keyah

Korah and Keyah were born at Dudley in 2004 and 2007 respectivly. There father was called Churchill and he died the day after Keyah was born. I think Churchill was born at Longleat to the infamous Jolly?

Just to correct - Churchill died the night before Keyah was born, and ofc this is said news :( hopefully they can start breeding again.

Just to correct the wrong facts

Kora was born at Edinburgh in june 1994

Clementine was born to Kora x Churchill December 2004

Keyah was born to Kora x Churchill June 2008

Churchill died the day after Keyah was born

Churchill did die the dayafter Keyah was born and not the day before as reported in the local press
That was the reason it took so long to get another male in as Keyah was to young to adjust to a new male.

I went to Dudley zoo today and found that the only remaining female giraffe, Keyah, died last week. I think she was only 2 years old. That leaves the new male on his own.

How sad :( I wondered why only Kubwa was there when I visited last Saturday.

Extremely sad news about Keyah!

Other sad, but also positive in one respect. Wutai the remaining male snow leopard will be moved to Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent on the 18th September to join another breeding programme :)

I would have thought this would be a bit of a gamble as he as already killed 2 females and seriously injured 2 others in the past
This would co inside with a rumour that a private collection near Worcester has had 2 medium sized cats for quaratine purposes and to be moved to a midland collection in October
I have made arrangements to visit this collection in the new year thanks to a friend from West Midlands Safari Park

Any idea what kind of medium sized cat you are referring to?
Or is this info under wraps ... (one understands).

My friend would not tell me but said it was very positive for both the zoo and a breeding programme but I have a hunch they are new animals to the zoo

Given all the recent Giraffe losses , I wonder if Dudley should consider replacing them with some hybrids , rather than bring in further scarce female Rothschilds' .

Surely this would be up to the stud book keeper? And hybrids would then be a waste of the new male as I assume he is pure as he was bought in to breed with the pure females. Does anyone know how many pure and how many hybrids are in in the country? Am I right in saying both Blair Drummond and Cotswolds hold newly acquired hybrid groups? I'm not disagreeing with the idea, just thinking that Dudley wouldn't want to give up a pure breed animal unless there was a deifinite scientific link to the 3 deaths.

There are plans to bring in 2 pure bred's from outside the UK. This would be great news for the UK breeding programme if this is to be succesful
On the deaths of the 3 females it is only a theory at present but they seem to think it is something to do with the breeding line and not a problem other than this.
Dudley zoo as been very successful over the years with breeding of the Rothchild's so I think if I was the stud book holder I would be very much in favour of the zoo staying in the breeding programme for this now very rare species

The zoo is getting a new snow leopard from Usti nad Labem zoo in Czech Republic at the end of October.
She's aged 1 1/2 years and her name is Nagna.

Great news about the new female snow leopard. I have heard a male is also lined up as a mate for her but he is still considered a little too young and so will not arrive until after Christmas.
Any news about the red panda baby?

I only saw one red panda, so I have no idea if there's a baby or not, maybe if there is they are both off show.

I did get a great view of 'Bart', the Geoffrey Cat next door, usually he's vot visible at all, but he was putting on a good show, although he was looking a bit sunken in to me,I've no idea how old he is but maybe he's justing getting on a bit now.

Also I didn't see any of the hunting dogs, this is unusual as they are always out and about.

It is good news about the snow leopard, but what would be even better is if the zoo could possibly make the enclosure bigger in time for the new ones.
It's possible to extend the pen sideways to make it longer, although I find the pen nice enough to look at it could be made better by increasing the size IMHO.

Didn't see the hunting dogs last time I went either. Havn't heard anything about what happened to Bram. Does anyone have details?

Both pandas were out and about around 2pm yesterday. Jasmine in particular was bustling around. One of the keepers said the baby was in a nest box.

I saw 3 hunting dogs curled up asleep together - at least I think it was 3 they were in a muddled pile.

I didn't see the geoffreys cat at all, so if you were there yesterday as well we had totally opposite visits :)
