Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoological Gardens in 2011

Just found this on Dudley's website

OCTOBER 27, 2011: Staff are celebrating the announcement of a £4.5million investment into Castle Hill from West Midlands European Regional Development Fund.
The five-year project will create a new access and shared arrival area for visitors to DZG, Black Country Living Museum and Dudley Canal Trust.
A dedicated £1.2million for DZG will upgrade roads across the 40-acre site, fund new signage and create a medieval animal-based visitor experience within the 11th century Dudley Castle.
DZG CEO Peter Suddock said: "This funding shows just how important the site and tourism are to the region.
"The programme will create easier access from the motorway, which will relieve current traffic problems, transform a derelict site into a car park accessed from a brand new infrastructure and boost visitor numbers."
The work is due to start next year – the zoos 75th anniversary.
Mr Suddock added: "This is wonderful news, coupled with £1.12million Heritage Lottery Funding to restore four of our 1937 Tecton buildings, plus our own investment programme which will create a new shop and boost the animal collection, it really is the icing on the cake and we're looking forward to a fantastic anniversary year."

It's about time as this project has been talked about for at least three years in the local press

Finally Dudley Zoo seem to have got themselves a sizeable chunk of Money to spend. I wonder what new species might appear, though it appears much of it will be spent on various upgrades of existing roads/buildings.

Is there any fresh news on improving the Chimp enclosure so they can have males? This seems to be one of those constant 'in future' projects.;)

Very good news of course. But which medieval animal could you base a visitor experience on? Hippogryphs perhaps ;)

Maybe they will be getting the lions to pose in different heraldic poses ;)

Seriously though, maybe it could be themed on European animals (bit vague sorry). Things like wolves, brown bear etc.

Will be passing on info on species to those who have in the past respected my wishes with info about the zoo by p/m

EDIT - this will be done shortly

Fortunately Dudley is/was in Worcestershire so there's no need to contemplate bear baiting....(suggest a look at Warwickshire's county emblem if you don't get my drift..) ;)

Nice to see that Dudley Zoo has finally secured substantial funding to improve major refurbishments as well as raise animal management and zoo husbandry standards.

I know in the past there was talk of a mediaeval-themed rare breeds farm in the Castle courtyard, which I thought was rather a nice idea.

It is indeed a lovely idea.
I wonder is concerts will continue to be a part of this area if and when animals move in.

Concerts were stopped earlier this year as the zoo said they were non profit making so this clears the way to use the coutyard

They now have a group of 3 Buffy-headed Capuchin, not sure of what sex the 3 are.Didn't notice any other new species since my last visit earlier in the year, apart from the arrival of the Gelada.

On my last visit they had 4 Capuchins and where using each of the quaratine enclosures but was told they had 3 females and 1 male anyone know if they still have the 4 or have they let one leave

Any update on the arrivals of the Sumatran Tigers and the arrival of the Male Black & Gold Howler Monkey

Update from today..

The public viewing area of the indoor primate house has been divided to allow the new female Capuchin to undergo Rabies quarentine. The indoor den that previously housed the Howler Monkey's is still visable. The rest of the house isn't.

New Sumatran Tigers arriving in early 2012 and the new Snow Leopards have yet to be introduced to each other

Did you notice any refurbishment taking place at the Porcupine enclosure now that they have moved them to the Monkey Tails Walk Thru
Have they completed the small avairy for the lovebirds at the end of the Orang-utan house by the indoor enclosures.
Did you also notice any refurbishment going on at the Bear Ravine Tecton Building as this was said to be happening this winter for new species early next year?

Hope the guacano will be staying somewhere in the zoo.

There's plenty of room for them, they could go in the ground outside the Queen Mary or on the hill with the llama's if they fence them apart.

@Chizlit Unfortunatly I don't know myself as yet but I do pick up information from a members forum on another site that as so far been very reliable so will p/m you when information is forth coming
