The Gorilla enclosure has certainly matured since it first opened, with much more vegetation and even what looks like some quite well-established birch trees growing as well. If you look at the 'Jambo and the boy' video from the past, it was just a series of bare hillocks then but they have added a lot of improvements since, both natural and artificial. Looks so much better. I guess the inside house is showing its age though as I know they want to enlarge it.

Yes, I agree, it looks like an excellent outdoor gorilla enclosure.

A very talented young zoochatter who has created a conservation outreach channel recently had this interview on the subject of the Durrell Trust's work with the Madagascar pochard with Dr Glynn Young the head bird keeper of Jersey Zoo:

 
Some sad news from Jersey Zoo - Gabriel, the last of the Saint Lucia parrots at the zoo, has died at the age of 45.

He arrived in Jersey as a chick in March 1976 to join a captive breeding programme. After a successful long-running project, the breeding programme was ended in 2010 because the wild population had significantly recovered. Gabriel contributed significantly to the programme, siring eight offspring over his lifetime.

An attractive species I've long associated with Jersey. But its good to hear the reason that they no longer need to keep them.

Sad news indeed.

Interesting to read about the instrumental role David Jeggo played in the ex-situ conservation of this species at Jersey.

I've met David and he's a very nice guy, clearly a lot of the bird species Jersey have kept and had success with has been down to his expertise.

I see :rolleyes:, wont pry on the "clandestine information" disclosed.

I'm glad to hear they are doing well despite the challenges of the present circumstance fingers crossed this continues into the future.
