An end-of-year update for Jersey. A few nuggets of information – 10 Livingstone’s Fruit Bats were born in 2021, the bush dogs have now been mixed with the bears and the titis are free-ranging with the tamarins. Notably, as the zoo have successfully raised the funding needed for the new gorilla house, the construction for the gorilla development will commence in a few weeks and will be completed by 2023.

The Mauritian reptiles have bred well with all three species breeding and Jersey reached a landmark with their local choughs with a chick that hatched from wild-hatched parents – a first. One of their choughs was also recorded in France.

A report on BBC news is suggesting that the breeding programmes at Jersey Zoo are going to be dramatically reduced, as Brexit has essentially cut them (and other British zoos) out of the Europe-wide breeding programmes.

According to head of Durrell Conservation Leslie Dickie, in the past year British zoos have only been able to move about two or three percent of the animals they normally transfer.

The news report can be found here:

I wonder if this was considered by any of the parties involved during the negotiating process; I don’t see any reason why the status quo needed to be changed in that regard at all.

Is it about time we had an organisation which lobbied in favour of zoos?

Although it isn't "news", I didn't want to open a new thread for the following question:

How much of the 13 hectares (according to wikipedia) the Durrell Wildlife Park/Jersey Zoo has is already used for exhibitry? And is there any space for extension (real and in theory), maybe the fields between the orang-utan and gorilla enclosures and the Rue de la Fosse respectively. Or the area in the West between the green houses and Rue de la Falaise?

Answers are very welcome and thanks very much in advance for those. And sorry for being a little off topic.

Not sure they would be interested in expansion.

Director? Do you mean the honourary director Lee Durrell or the CEO Leslie Dickie?

Mark Brayshaw? He is/was the director of zoo operations.

It appears Mark Brayshaw has transitioned from his role as Director of Zoo Operations at Jersey Zoo to the Curator of Mammals at Chester Zoo. Numerous media articles mention him in this new role starring from December 2021.

The Director of Zoo Operations role is not being currently advertised, so was presumably filled leading up to or immediately following his departure.

The field you refer to was earmarked for a new Gorilla habitat pre covid. However now a new house is being constructed adjacent to the existing enclosure.

Not sure why you think Lee has left Jersey. She still communicates with members.

Ah so he's gone to chester. Anyone know who has taken over?
