Dutch Ape Thread

Yes sorry, I was counting actual institutions that are counted on Zootierliste, not rescue centres :)

Althrough Stichting AAP IS a rescue center, it can be freely visited and for the Chimps I don't think it makes a difference if they are kept in a "real" zoo or in a rescue center ;).

On ZTL there are listed two Dutch zoos that hold bornean orangutans, the other in Rhenen (Ouwehands Dierenpark)? And none wich hold Sumatran orangutans.

This is a thing I also was wondering about. Historicly the Netherlands always have had a surtain conection with Orang utans ( the first orang utan ever exported was exhibed in the Netherlands and several of the larger zoos had realy good breeding-results with these apes !
Because Indonesia was a former colony of the Netherlands Orang utans have always been avaible for the Dutch zoos and if we look at the former keepers quite a number of zoos have had them:
Borneo orang
-Artis Amsterdam
-Burgers Arnhem
-Dolfinarium Harderwijk ( ! )
-Blijdorp Rotterdam
-Wassenaar ( now closed )
North-eastern Borneo orang :
-Apenheul
-Burgers Arnhem
-Blijdorp Rotterdam
Sumatra orang :
-Artis Amsterdam
-Burgers Arnhem
-Den Haag ( now closed )
-Blijdorp Rotterdam
-Wassenaar ( now closed )
Orang utan ( sub ) species unknown / hybrid :
-Artis Amsterdam
-Apenheul
-Burgers Arnhem
-Den Haag ( now closed )
-Rhenen
-Blijdorp Rotterdam
-Wassenaar ( now closed )
As you see quite a number of former keepers and realy a pitty that only so little intrest seems to exist for the Orang utan in the Netherlands !

Yeah, quite strange, so little interest for orangutans in the Netherlands, otherwise so wanted zoo animals. Simmilar in Belgium, there is just one zoo with orangutans (Sumatran).

At least the UK is (relatively) smart with how valuable they are haha; 8 zoos (Chester and Monkey World both Bornean and Sumatran, Colchester with a bachelor group of a Bornean and a hybrid, Durrell with just Sumatran, and Blackpool, Dudley, Paignton and Twycross with just Bornean)

And what the Netherlands lacks in terms of orang-utans they make up for with gorillas; seven of the eight Dutch zoos that have apes have them!

Yes because of that, and for several other reasons (eg. in 1999, the Netherlands is the third largest holder of Asian elephants, in Europe, after Germany and UK), or there are relatively a lot of zoos for not so big country, and because it holds many other rare and spectacular zoo animals (like okapis, bonobos, ..), I see the Netherlands as fifth ''most zoo'' country in Europe, in one of my threads (for fun), after Germany, UK, France and Spain,...

Another Dutch zoo which want to start keeping apes ( Chimpanzees ) is Dierenrijk in Nuenen, they are planned to come in 2016.

Ayyy! The first Dutch zoo I ever went to :) part of my family live in Eindhoven so they took me there

But London, Bristol and Edinburgh, all zoos with a long history with Orangutans, no longer keep them- London regarded them as labour intensive during their economic crisis period in the early 1990's and so went out of them deliberately. Bristol, on closure of their(three species -designed) Ape House also parted with theirs,(latterly Sumatrans) having decided to just focus on Gorillas from then on.

Edinburgh, despite the first UK breeding, had many Orangs pass through their collection over several decades but with unsatisfactory results, until finally going out of them.

Twycross used to have both species.

Flamingo Park used to have Orangs, but no longer.

And the Netherlands holds 65 western lowland gorillas! That's about 14% of total European population.

That's for example more than 3 times of number of the western lowland gorillas that Australia holds, just for comparasion.

So good result for Holland. :p

I don't now how many western lowland gorillas live in UK or in Germany, or in France, and in Spain?

Anybody to know how many western lowland gorillas live in Howletts and Port Lymne zoo, the Aspinal's zoos? I think they hold greatest number of them from all of the zoos world wide?

Also the monkey world in UK holds the greatest number of chimpanzees of all zoos world wide?

Update to the list; the orang-utans at Ouwehands are indeed 6. Male Bako, females Anak, Tjintah and Jewel, and offspring Damai (M, Bako x Jewel) and Daya (F, Bako x Jewel).

Monkey World definitely has the largest number of chimps in Europe, though Chimp Haven in the US may have more. And there's a centre in Brazil that may have more too...

As for all this gorillas stuff, let me do some quick research for you...

55 gorillas in France

95 in Germany

43 in Spain, including at Loro Parque in Tenerife

100 in the UK, of which 26 are at Howletts and 21 at Port Lympne.

This really should be discussed in another thread, but there you go :)

I have an old studbook that includes males Yuno (born 2006 Bako x Tjintah)) and Jingga (born 2007 Bako x Jewel) - do you know where they've gone? And do you have Damai's date of birth?

I think I know the studbook you mean, is it the 2011 edition?

Damai is Jingga's nickname, he is referred to that by the staff at the zoo.

Yuno unfortunately passed away on the 29/8/14 at the age of 8 :(

Yes, that's the one. I try to update it from news on Zoochat so thanks for the information. Keep up the good work :)

Thank you, glad to read this.

Visited Stichting AAP yesterday and from the information on one of the signs near the Chimp-complex I know now that they have ( at least ) 20 Chimps in 3 groups, 1 pair and a single male. This makes them the second largest public Chimp-holder in the Netherlands - from personel observation I'm quite sure Beekse Bergen keeps more then 20 animals.
The groups/pair/single animals at Stichting AAP are :
Tomas, Zorro, Willy and Juus
Julio, Jim, Toto, Regina, Fiffy and Linda
Buddy, Macario, Sony and Umyoro
Tanno, Mimmi and Dolly
Freddy and Mojo
Fritz
It is also possible that they have even more Chimps in the quarantaine room but these were then not visiable.
As soon as there is a Gallery created for Stichting AAP I will up-load pictures of the Chimps and the Chimp-complex.

Ahh ok thanks vogelcommando! You seem to be very in the loop with the Dutch zoos so do you know details for the Amersfoort chimpanzee group? Thanks!

Also I forgot to mention it here; a new male orangutan has been born at Ouwehands to Bako and Jewel, meaning there are now 20 Bornean orangutans in the Netherlands split between Apenheul and Ouwehands.
