Dutch Zoo Tour

That makes sense about the lack of monkeys in the Bush. But I wonder how Omaha manages to have many free-ranging monkeys in the Lied Jungle. One of the magical experiences in Omaha's LJ is having a little tamarin on the railing, just a meter or so away from you, with no barriers.

I also understand about the manatees. Despite no underwater viewing, they were nevertheless very popular, drawing quite a crowd. There was a keeper in the water with them, feeding them.

it may have been surpassed slightly the next day when I saw Blijdorp's Oceanarium.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the various Dutch zoos, and I look forward to seeing your longer report on them. Will you also be putting something up about your trip to Moscow? I'm sure many would be fascinated to read this.

On a pedantic note, the building at Blijdorp (one can't really call it an aquarium because it's so much more than that) is the "Oceanium" rather than the "Oceanarium". I'm not sure whether the difference is one that is more relevant in Dutch than in English - but I was promptly corrected when I used the incorrect title on my last visit!

Thanks, Sooty. Yes, our website page on this trip will be similar to my reports from my Moscow/Iberia trip and my Mexico trip. Glad you've found them interesting. Hey, I just noticed that you haven't seen my "Moscow trip" details. They are here:
European Zoo Trip 2009 - America's Best Zoos

Thank you also for the correction on "Oceanium". To be honest, I never noticed that, but my quick look at the Blijdorp map confirms you are right.

Did you, Sooty, notice my comments about Emmen? I somewhat agreed with you on your critique of why they are completely rebuilding. I simply found Emmen to be wonderful, and not really in great need for a complete rebuilding. But to the contrary, I concluded that I can understand why they'd want to eliminate the half-km long walk between the two zoo sections, and finally -- if they have the money, why not?

Great to see you enjoyed yourself in Holland, and thanks for the (in the end quite lengthy) reply :) Looking forward to your "Dutch page"!
