Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2011 #2

Did either yourselves or GL see the new baby Drill in the Monkey House? Anyone know what sex it is?

Whilst stood at the marbled polecat enclosure, we made another sighting of an elusive species - a GentleLemur! Was good finally meeting a fellow ZooChatter. Needless to say, his photos of the polecats and aardwolves will put those I took today to shame, lol.

It was a pleasure to meet TLD and his girlfriend yesterday, we were regularly checking the enclosures of the golden cats, polecats and aardwolves, but nothing really happened until around 5 pm, so I left the Zoo rather later than I planned. I have only just finished downloading and reviewing my photos, and I'll be able to post a few eventually, including a polecat and an aardwolf, but I ought to do the ones from HWP first.
I enjoyed visiting Edinburgh; the highlights for me (apart from the ones already mentioned) were the white-faced sakis looking very well in old lemur walkthrough, the chevrotains and the baby drill (it was strong and taking an interest in its surroundings, but the mother was holding it very carefully and I couldn't get any clue about its gender).

So were we. I still hadn't seen one (anywhere, including Auckland) until late in the day, when a hugely helpful member of Edinburgh's staff along with Simon - who it was a pleasure to meet - pointed out the location of the one in the enclosure behind the bears. It wasn't until I photographed the area and looked on the back of my camera that I could actually spot the cat!

It then turned out that one of the ones on the hill had been sitting in front of the window earlier in the afternoon. Typical.

Strangely enough, yesterday was the first time myself and Helly had ever had difficulty in spotting any golden cats - the one behind the bears, Ipoh, is usually pretty easy to spot, as he likes to sun himself on a ledge just opposite from the viewing window. But he was indeed huddled down perfectly camoflaged yesterday! :D

Myself and Helly did actually spot Simon yesterday, as well as GL, but were too shy to say hello and ask if it was indeed him - the same would have gone for GL if he had not said hello first!

Thats a bit strange that they are breaking up the lionesses. They are twins both being born in 1997. You would think they would send them together

One minor point I forgot to mention before - the Night Heron escapees from the 1980s are still extant in the area around the zoo. How long *do* Night Heron live?

no idea on ages but most of the older ones would be dead now but they would more than likly of brought to the zoo chicks to show them where to find food so they will be around for a while

have to say living next to the zoo and hearing lions roar during the night is an amazing experiance

I saw the female in the main enclosure, but I didn't see the male at all - so I'm afraid I can't help.

If the female wa sin the main enclosure, chances are the male was in the side enclosure, he likes to sit high up in there.

Regarding the lions, - seems to be a bit of a swap around in the Asiatic Lion population at the moment. I know that Edinburgh has had quite a disappointing few years breeding wise since the 4 cubs were born, with several post-natal deaths occurring.

Does anyone know if the planned female Jaguar is coming? I notice Chester are having a switch around in their Jaguar exhibit.

these birds were ones hatched at the zoo probably about ten years or so ago now. The colony became free-flying in the 50's after damage to the enclosure and they were fed in the zoo until the early part the new millenium. Until then the birds bred in the trees around the sea lions and chicks were given rings before they fledged so they would be identifiable around the area. As far as I know there are only 2, maybe 3 birds still around and don't think they are breeding anywhere.

There are changes in the jaguar house at Chester but as far as I'm aware nothing at all affecting the actual cats - the changes are all in the public areas and support exhibits.

It would seem that there has been a new Malayan Tapir birth at Edinburgh - someone has uploaded a photograph on Facebook. I would assume it is less than three or four weeks old, as there was no sign of this having happened at the time.

they say escaped and not seen for a while but i have seen up to 8 of them in the last few years at the zoo near the sealions

I think in the earlier years after they first escaped the free flying colony of Night herons was 40-50 birds strong and ranged outside of the Zoo as well. I can remember my first visit to Edinburgh Zoo in the 1960's and seeing a number of them perched in trees along the Eastern boundary wall/fence of the Zoo.

It was born earlier this week and is a female.
