Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2012 #3

The 1-year old clouded leopard 0,1 Wanita from Ostrava is going to Edinburg soon.

i assume they will be going where the amurs are when they finally leave

Well, we know the wolverines are intended to move up to HWP too - and there's been more talk of that lately than there has the Amur move, so it is possible this is the enclosure which will be vacant.

Maybe they will connect the Amur and Wolverine enclosures together to create a bigger exhibit, it will be so much better for them!

Yay I will be very happy when this actually happens (though sad to not see the Amurs so often). I too was told of it a while back but with all the changes to things people had been told recently I was starting to wonder if it was actually going to happen now.

Is there any chance they could end up in the old bintorong enclosure if the Margay don't? Otherwise JamesB's idea sounds good to me!

Work had begun on an enclosure for the wolverine when I visited the HWP a couple of weeks ago. They will be located on the site of the old bharal enclosure which is between the red panda and lynx.Clouded leopards are exciting, a species i have never seen before.

Carnivore and Panda Talk

Finally got a few seconds to write a post about the meeting last night so i will attempt to recap...

The Golden Cat in big cat row that is always in the barrel is Kan who is the newest and youngest of the cats.

Rica the Jaguar introductions to Moegli through the mesh is going really well...and they calling to each other which is a good sign. She is only 2 years old and when she matures they will physically be put together.

Jayendra the young lion from bristol is 22months old. He is getting on well with Kamlesh and tho he is not mature and she is an old female they still feel that there is a chance they could mate but it will just depend on him maturing.

The 11 meerkats have dug a huge network of tunnels and the keepers are spending their days filling in only for them to reopen them again...lol

They got a new male stripped skunk this on Wednday (26/9) called felix and he has been mixed with flower the female already. The other female that they had died earlier this year. Felix is 5 months old and came from Tierpark Berlin

The african hunting dogs now consist of three males and two females. Blade is the top male, he can be recognized by the shoulder blade pattern over his shoulders. Tango is the second male...and he is called that cause he is the most ginger colour. Two socks is the third male and the most submissive one and he looks like he has two socks on his front feet. The two females are called Flash and Jet... Flash has a white flash between her shoulders and Jet is the one with the most black in it.

They are now all integrated into a pack. Tho Blade, Flash and Jet feed first... and then Tango and TwoSocks. There are a few cuts over them especially the males as they are sorting out the hierarchic but over the past week things have really settled down now and there has been a few mating attempts from Blade and Flash (Flash is the top female dog).

Sofas the sealion left this week for Poland... they successfully crate trained him and he arrived safely... his new enclosure looks really good and he has one female there atleast. There is also two pools... and outdoor one and and heated indoor one.

Pandas...both seem to be settling in much better now. Tho at the moment they are being kept in during the weekdays because of the building work on the penguin enclosure. They have been playing classical music to them to calm them as well...lol They will still be sending the urine sample to ChesterZoo.

They have realised that not only the female comes into season but the male does as well. Last year they feel that the female came into season and then the male after she had been in season and therefore missing each other really.

Tigers are now in with each other. The female however doesnt seem to be showing visible signs of being in season that the keepers can see. So they are monitoring them closely and they might be attempting to take urine sample in the future to monitor it.

They had sourced a young female Clouded leopard however it had a virus that would have been dangerous for the other animals in the collection so they are sourcing another one.

They will either be going into the Amur leopard enclosure or the Wolverine enclosure. The wolverine's will be going to the HWP soon. Both Amur leopards thought to be leaving the collection. They are an incompatible pair. By the time their is an enclosure ready at the HWP it will be another pair as they ones at Edinburgh Zoo will have been moved on by that time and replaced by clouded leopards. So the wolverines are moving to the HWP first before Amur leopards are in the HWP.

The Margays are going into the Bintrong enclosure. They have been slowly introduced while being off show and there has been mating seen so there is a chance the female is already pregnant.

I hope thats most of what was said... I am REALLY excited about the clouded leopards coming... it will be a great addition to the zoo...and one i have personally been desperate to see for many years... so i can see many hrs of me camping out infront of their enclosure for photos already...lol.

Interesting; although he is certainly the newest of the Golden Cats, I'd heard he was also the oldest, having been born in 2000/2001, whilst Swai-fai and Ipoh were born in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Now this is interesting, as we already knew the other female had died earlier this year - but this suggests that the old male recently died too, as he was mixed with Flower when she arrived in the spring. Either that, or they now have 2.1 skunks.

I look forward to this species very much; I suspect I too will be a constant companion to those camping outside the enclosure :p I'll be camping out in front of the margays too!

Fingers very definitely crossed; a lovely species.

I think it was the old male that died.. sorry got them mixed up... there is definately only 2 there now... the new male felix and flower...and they are meant to be out much more during the day

See you outside the clouded leopard enclosure!! lol

Yeah, once flower was introduced to the old male, both of them became incredibly easy to spot :p it's nice that he got a bit more confident and outgoing in his twilight months!

Excellent news about the Clouded Leopards! Edinburgh used to keep them in the 1970s. As has already been pointed out, though, they are not always the easiest of cats to spot in an exhibit....
Does anyone know when they might be arriving? I'm up there next month, but that would be too much to hope for. Usually, they get something really exciting just after we've come home!

They didnt mention a timeframe regarding the clouded leopards... just that the female had been due to arrive within the next week or so but that had to changed because of the virus so they need to source another one

Thanks Lesley. I doubt they will source another within 3 weeks.
We'll have something to look forward to seeing next year!

Thank you for this excellent report on a Big Cat fanatic. :p

I believe the female Amur Leopard has been mixed twice (?) with the male and on the second occasion had tried to kill him. So things aren't working out there. Both are still young enough to breed, do you know if they are going to be sent to try breeding elsewhere in different pairs?

Shame about the Clouded Leopard. I hope they manage to source one before my visit again in December time. I really need to get these on my 'species list'. :p

Golden Cats- My understanding is that 'Bruno' the old (Now deceased) male was born in 1997. Khan the new male was born in 2000, he arrived in April (?) from Rotterdam, before that Edinburgh held 1.1 (siblings) as Bruno had deceased in February/March. The 1.1 were Swai-Fai and Ipoh both born at Parc Des Felines. Swai-Fai is only four and Ipoh only three. Not as old as I originally thought.

Could one of the Edinburgh members keep us up to date when the Margays go on-show. Would like to see one when I visit.

I would not read to much truth into any of this as lots of it is factually incorrect.

Its not very clear what exactly you are referring to Pudu? The updates from the big cat talk posted by Lesly, JordanJaguars post or someone elses?

If its the update from the big cat talk the majority of it either fits with the bits and pieces I've been told by various keepers over the past few months or confirms things other zoochatters have been told so none of it seems that unlikely?

I wonder if the plan to move the Rockhoppers to the old Sealion pool has been changed because of how well they have taken to their 'old' enclosure?

Be good to see my favourite Margays back on show, and Clouded Leopards as well.

Had a visit to the zoo yesterday, very quiet (as only Fife schools seem to be on holiday this week) - so much so that we were asked on arrival if we needed Panda tickets (although we had booked on line) and were in fact able to go back later in the day for a 'second' viewing. We didn't stay all day as the weather turned not long after lunch, so we didn't venture any further north than the Gentoo enclosure. (No big cats - boo!)

For the first time, we actually saw both pandas moving about, although Yang Guian seemed to prefer to be in his off show area, he wandered through, had a sniff around them went back again. He also sat for a while in the door having a scratch! Tian Tian was on one of her bedding areas, then had a wander over to her feeding platform. One thing I noticed was new (or at least I hadn't noticed before) was that they have coated the floor of the panda house with what looks like rubberised material like they use on childrens playgrounds.

Next door, in the Monkey House, there is a very young baby L'Hoest Monkey (Born 28th Sept). It is tiny, and it's eyes are barely open. Very cute, although what I presume is an older sibling was doing 'look at me' behaviour to it's aprents, much like a human older child! Mum had a bite wound on her head which looked clean, but it was obviously bothering her as she kept scratching it.

Not many other monkeys about, I suspect they were all outside enjoying the unseasonally warm sunshine we had in the morning!

The former bushbaby enclosure in the Binturong housing now has a Taiwanese Beauty Snake in it - good to see RZSS exhibiting more reptiles again. No signposting on the Viseyan Warty Pig enclosure, and I'm not sure they weren't actually Wild boar, but no expert!!

We also noted that the enclosure between the toliet blocks at the back of the Rhino House/Education centre now appears to have Ring Tailed Lemurs in it - didn't see any, but it is signposted as that. Dwarf Mongooses were very cute, and a couple of the youngsters seemed to take a shine to my son, and Marbled Polecats and Aardwolves were as elusive as always!!

No doubt the keepers are aware, but a couple of the Meerkats kept launching themselves at the overhang on their exhibit, and at least one was pretty close to getting a foothold!

Also saw the new pelicans being fed, and inspite of seeing the species before both in the wild and in captivity, I was still surprised at how big they were!

Oh, and we also saw a moving Koala! Moving pandas and koalas on the same visit - that's what I call successful!
