Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2018

Not so strange as this transfer was supposedly intercontinental. Can you even begin to imagine all the preperatory paperwork, stringent testing, bureacracy, non-paper non overlap issues and then we also have to deal with the practicalities of moving an animal and the staff on site who have their daily chores and training to have the animal moved. Aside: a deal like this may still fall through and depends largely on good cooperation between a good number of different institutions and with a lot of diplomacy involved on the part of the zoo community and the individual zoo institutions themselves.

In short, do you even have a clue what it takes ...., it is not like a human being going to Kathmandu and buying a plane ticket, looking for acco and picking up your passport and go to the airport! And also remember it is not your personal likes or dislikes that define zoo policy and certainly not husbandry management of animal species and it is best not to be so absolutely judgemental ... as I find it rather disrespectful on zoo keeping staff.

Suffice to say ...., if it happens it is great. If not, well we all live another day, month, year ... or whatever. So, relax and wait and see what transpires when said rhino Bertus finally might move and the zoo PR starts doing their bit.

I when to the Botanics on the rare summers day for the first time in years.

Glad to hear that the aviary is going to be big. I do hope it isn't a lorikeet aviary. It seems too big for just 19 lorikeets when BB currently houses 34 (iirc) birds

First time poster but a fairly regular visitor to Edinburgh Zoo!

As the plans for the new walk through aviary are variously marked "New Lorikeet Aviary 2018" and "Rainbow Landings" it looks like it will indeed hold the rainbow lorikeets (initially at least!)

It looks like this will be a nice addition to the Brilliant Birds walk through. I imagine they intend to allow visitors to purchase and feed nectar to them as a way of generating some additional interest/income?

Hi Folks, new here but not to Edinburgh zoo.
Few observations from a visit on Saturday:

The areas around the Lion enclosure are all opened up again, no sign of anything different, however. The tiger is still in the lower enclosure.

There were 3 Rockhopper chicks in the nests at the top of their enclosure, glad to see that keeping them in penguins rock seems to have been successful again so fingers crossed.

There was also (at least) 3 baer's pochard chicks, one who seems to have mastered swimming backwards!!

No sign of Maya (last years Tapir Calf) not sure if she's been moved to another zoo or was just off show, it was around about now last year that Baku moved to Antwerp.

Bertus was still at the zoo.

Maya was still in Edinburgh when I visited last Sunday so any move would have been very recent, they usually post about the Tapir's moving on, hopefully she was just off show today and is still there, she's a favourite of my little boy!

Be curious to see what happens with the lions - they've not had a lot of luck with lion cubs in recent years

Can now officially confirm Bertus' move from Edinburgh Zoo to Batu Secret Zoo in Malang, East Jawa, Indonesia. A 48 hour journey with direct flight from Luxemburg to Surabaya and from there on to Malang.

The second article talks at some length about the zoo now being part of the EEP GOH rhino. Head keeper RZSS plus accompanied transfer and handled getting local zoo staff familiar with their new charge.

Received some good reports in local press:
