Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2023

Visited this fine valentine’s morning & a few things to note:

As discussed in the ‘ZSL London Zoo 2023’ thread, the pgymy hippo calf, Amara has been moved to London. Both doors into/out of the hippo house are now back in use.

Both tigers were active and moving around alot. Dharma was in the tracks enclosure with Lucu in the older enclosure.
A volunteer said plans were to attempt to introduce them again soon in the hopes of breeding this year.
They said the reason why there had been no cubs yet was that Lucu was a ‘mummy’s boy’ who was to timid around Dharma to successfully mate - hopefully this year will be the year for some cubs!

A new climbing structure built in the Chinese goral enclosure.

The giraffes were all outside and very active today. One was following and continuously trying to mount another.
The other three were all clubbed together with alot of neck hitting going on between them.

Visayan warty pigs were present in the old tapir enclosure. Some still also in the enclosure opposite the Egyptian vultures so not to sure what the situation is.

Lion’s are still seperated with the brothers in the big enclosure and dad Jay in the smaller one. Told the plan is to castrate the boys so they can all eventually be mixed together

And finally, saw both koala joey’s. House was busy with the public and there was a que system in place to keep it quite in there for them.

A busy half term visit but a lovely one in the sunshine!

I think there will be quite a few 'mummy's boys' on Valentine's Day. Whether some should be castrated Is another issue.

I've arranged a visit to Edinburgh Zoo on 23rd March, my last visit was in October 2021. For those who go regularly, has much changed in that time?
The main aims for my visit are seeing Tian Tian and Yang Guang one last time before they go, and seeing the animals in Wee Beasties. Do they still have the blue poison dart frogs? Because they're not listed on the zoo's website but they'recstill listed on Zootierliste. And does anyone know which species are in the reef tank now? A recent post on the zoo's Facebook page showcased clownfish and sea anemones, but is there much else in there?
After skimming through the animals listed on the website, I've made a check list of species I didn't get to see last time, a total of 24, including the Egyptian vulture, Philippene spotted deer and Scottish wildcat among others. I'm hoping I can see at least 15 or so of these.

Egyptian vultures are normally very active. There are 2 and they are on the last exhibit on the bend before you drop down the hill to the Penguins.
I think Philippine Spotted Deer share with the Musk Deer? I’ve only seen the one Musk Deer, and one PSD in there, better spotted on the upper walkway than lower.
Two Wildcat exhibits next to each other. Female usually easy to see on left as you look at exhibit. Male can be elusive.

Not sure what’s in Wee beasties. I personally like the Taiwanese Beauty Snake they hold though.

Can’t help on the tank, not a fish person :)

A few people been saying that they’ve been seeing the male Panda outside in the mornings lately. Personally I’ve never seen the pandas outside bar the female in her offshow paddock behind the house, which can be viewed at a certain viewpoint at a split in the houses.

Enjoy your day out.

Good to see something in the tapir enclosure. Wonder why they put a climbing structure in the goral enclosure.

Chimpanzee Lianne gave birth on Monday. Sadly a short time later, the infant died after fighting broke out amongst the troop. The zoo has said that Lianne is coping well and is socialising with the other chimps.

Sad news indeed. Edinburgh have not had much success with chimp breeding since they brought the West African group in. Just one successfully raised, or more than that?

Wasn't it Lianne that gave birth to the stillborn couple if years ago?
Hope this is the end of Edinburgh's bad luck

News from today’s visit:

• Saw both the koala joeys with each of their mums.

• There is a new climbing structure getting built in the first indoor Living Links enclosure

• As previously stated, there are visayan warty pigs in the old tapir enclosure. The indoors has been redone and a perimeter fence put round the outdoors, though most of the enclosure still isn’t accessible.

• The empty monkey walkthrough is closed and the agoutis aren’t in their enclosure anymore, though you can still see the red-bellied lemurs indoors.

• The red bellied and ring tailed lemurs were in their outdoor enclosure for once- the latter were climbing right to the tops of some of the trees to feed on buds.

• Both the hairy armadillos were active

• The geladas still don’t have access to the main enclosure

• The front of the flamingo aviary has some nice new wood on it- much like the warty pig’s enclosure

Do they have 2 breeding groups of Warty Pigs?

Hopefully they can make better use of the space at the top of the zoo then, perhaps this ties in with the fact the adjacent panda enclosures will soon be empty too, giving more opportunity for development in that area.

Enjoy your day out.

I've seen Yang Guang outside a number of times recently, generally he tends to be outside later in the day whereas in the morning and around lunchtime he is almost always inside and the keepers tend to leave treats first thing in the morning.

If you want to see him outside, try around 3/4pm. Tian Tian doesn't seem to go outside much these days though. I do hope they dont return as early as October but even the Zoo are unsure of when they are leaving but I am told that Alison (and maybe another keeper) will be going with the pandas to China for at least 3 months to help them settle in.

Glad to see the RZSS win the Edinburgh Business awards this year and it appears that for 2022 visitor numbers remained above 600,000 - despite the cost of living crisis and the fact that there were fewer events last year, such as no Christmas lights display.
