Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2023

Not just that - nowhere in captivity.
And I'm not entirely sure of the import of a large, endangered, intelligent mammal would be easiest thing to do ...

Yes that was my bad, I thought they had them in the states, specifically San Diego - but it would seem not.

The Sumatran species are a lot more numerous though, including at Chester Zoo.

Well they aren't. It is better to check what you wrote is correct before posting. Bornean orangutan are more numerous, not only in the UK + Jersey: 8 vs. 3 holders (Chester and Monkey World have both....), but also in Europe....

Yes I know that, I meant in comparison to the Tapanuli…

A few updates from tonights AGM:

  • The zoo are close to signing agreements in regards to the replacement species for the Giant Panda's. As mentioned in a previous post it's likely that current Zebra enclosure will be incorporated into this new species development. It is anticipated that the new species will arrive in June/July 2024.
  • There is no fixed date yet for the Giant Panda's departure however when they do depart the Koala's will be moved into the Panda's current enclosure while there area is refurbished. Upon completion of the Koala refurbishment and when the Koala's have returned to their own enclosure, it was mentioned the Gelada's may also move into Panda's current enclosure to allow a refurbishment of there enclosure. So these refurbishments are likely to take place before June/July 2024.
  • It was confirmed the Drills should be on show within the next 2 weeks.
  • There are plans in place to bring in a new Vicuna herd to HWP. Also at HWP the Eurasian Cranes have had a new enclosure built and the Red Panda's are also getting a new enclosure built.
  • The zoo are also planning to build a new Rhino enclosure in the future although no specific timeline for this was mentioned.
  • The Saki Monkey Walkthrough, which is currently empty, is likely going to be turned into a "Quiet Place" garden area.
oh dear another enclosure being lost to plants :(

Seems to be very much part of David’s agenda and philosophy when it comes to the Zoo (as mentioned in a previous post) I think a lot of people are quite divided by this.

Visited for the first time in several years recently, and was disappointed to see such vacant enclosures. Especially so the enclosure by the warty pigs (previously held owls I think) and the now largely vacant big cat row. While these exhibits generally held animals that perhaps were not major draws, they often held interesting species, hence it's especially disappointing to see such spaces being neglected.
My impression when visiting was that these spaces were being used 'creatively' in between inhabitants (which I thought was admirable), but to hear that this is the direction that the zoo is to take is worrying. Hopefully the director was just putting a spin on these empty exhibits.

I appreciate the idea of there being a quiet space where people can have a moment and gather their thoughts on arriving at the zoo which is, I believe, the idea of the garden space replacing the walkthrough.

However, it doesn’t change the fact that, for me, there are far too many empty spaces which look frankly abandoned or just go on for too long without anything.

Between the path leading up to the lions and the lower tiger enclosure you have an empty enclosure, then the wildcats, then a whole load of nothing (ok signs about Scottish wildlife but that’s not enough) where the cat enclosures used to be.

That’s just an example but zoo visitors don’t think, ok, here is breathing space between amazing and inspirational experiences, they just think why is that enclosure empty and why am I walking so far without seeing any animals.

Maybe he was, but I don’t know if you were at the AGM but he was saying something along the lines of “instead of an animal here there and everywhere we are going for a more hollistic approach to the zoo”.

Perhaps next time I might ask him what he actually means by this (someone did specifically ask why there are seemingly more empty exhibits these days).

It’s a fine line , but I do think it’s good that they are making the zoo more family friendly in bringing in more reflective “quiet spaces” for people to reflect.

For the average punter they would generally visit the zoo for the big draws (pandas, rhinos, tigers , giraffes etc) and would not be as engaged with a relatively common species and that the money would be better spent on much nicer and more inclusive enclosures for the big draws (for example they are going to refurbish the rhino exhibit).

In any case it’s better they transform some of these empty enclosures than keeping them empty in the hope that they may source an animal suitable enough for it one day, which has proven more difficult due to politics such as brexit red tape etc.

For me personally, while I probably do spend too much time at some of the exhibits - whenever I visit I never have enough time to see all the animals as it is.

They will need to get new zebras aw what they have are older mares

There are three Grevy’s zebra at Edinburgh Zoo - Azizi, Daniella and Grace.

Daniella was born in 2002 and arrived in 2008, Grace was born in 2018 and arrived in 2021 and Azizi was born in 2019 and arrived in 2022.

So they have one older mare, and two young females.

For those interested - Edinburgh Zoo have a new guidebook coming out, it's available for pre-order, a welcome change as guidebooks seem to be disappearing in zoos!

Pre-Order Edinburgh Zoo Guidebook

A massive surprise, as it has literally been 18 years since their last guidebook  but a very welcome one. A pity there does not seem to be a companion volume for Highland Wildlife Park, but considering the fact that RZSS did very little (if anything) to mark the 50th anniversary of said collection last year, it's par for the course.

Watch this space is what I've been told... ;)
