Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2023

Koala's will be moving up to the old Panda Exhibit when the Panda's leave, so that work can start on a new Koala enclosure and outdoor space, where their current exhibit is. So the permanent new species at the old Panda exhibit will be a bit of time yet.

Funny when I was at Edinburgh few weeks ago they said geladas are going in the panda enclosure

Maybe koalas in one of the indoor houses and geladas in the other house and the outdoor enclosure.

At the last AGM it was confirmed that the Koala's and Gelada's would both be temporarily re-housed to the current Giant Panda enclosure when the Giant Panda's leave, to allow their current enclosures to be refurbished. It was not confirmed if both species would be housed their at the same time, or at separate times. My guess would be they will move one species, re-furbish their enclosure, and then move them back before then moving the 2nd species in and re-furbishing their enclosure and then moving them back. At that time they should then be ready to welcome the new species into the current Giant Panda enclosure, at some point in 2024.

RZSS CEO David Feld has responded to the UK Government’s intention to deprioritise species restoration:

"I was surprised and dismayed to read about the UK Government’s intention to deprioritise species restoration, which fails to recognise the importance of that vital pillar of biodiversity recovery, as well as flying in the face of recent guidance from the world authority for conservation, the IUCN. As an organisation, we stand with partners across the conservation community to ask, in the strongest possible terms, that the UK Government considers and reverses its stance immediately.

As Scotland’s wildlife conservation charity, RZSS has been making great progress with partners to safeguard and restore wildlife in Scotland and around the world, but this needs to be considered and supported at a government level. Without a focus on species reintroduction and restoration, and the genetic diversity within those species, we could find ourselves in a situation where we have restored habitats but have lost their rarer and more vulnerable inhabitants.

RZSS agrees with the EFRA Committee’s calls to introduce a long-term strategy for species restoration and, furthermore we want to see the introduction of a National Programme for species restoration. That kind of long-term, strategic commitment would ensure allow for the creation of similar projects to the RZSS-led reintroduction of wildcats into the Cairngorms and ensure the long-term future of some of our most important and amazing native animals.

RZSS CEO"

Visited today. Noticed there are now L’hoest’s monkeys in the old drill enclosure, 2 adults and one youngster, which you can see from behind the second red panda enclosure. I don’t know if they are still in the main enclosure or not. Also, all the climbing frames have been removed in Tanami the male koala’s old area.

I see the Smithsonian pandas are back in China now. Only a couple more weeks of Yang Guang & Tian Tian left before they go too.

It’s sad to see them go in all honesty, they’ve become part of Edinburgh’s identity itself for the past 12 years, I don’t think the UK will see pandas again in my lifetime.

At least they are going in December, there were rumors that they may depart as early as October, and without the negotiations it would of been 2021 so that is something to takeaway and as I’ve stated many times now, I don’t feel I would of been as involved or as passionate about conservation and nature without them.

I think it was in my childhood that I went up to Edinburgh to see the panda [Yang Guang]... obviously it was a very special experience for myself.
Last year I saw the pandas at Berlin... but Edinburgh's were more active. Berlin's, as pandas do, seemed to laze the day away in mid-day when I came in... and when I came back to the panda area around 6 in the evening one was munching on bamboo but unfortunately away from the camera.
I would like to try again with panda someday. I was considering going to Edinburgh this year for one last visit... but felt given the co-operation tendencies of pandas; and the fact that Edinburgh was a few species lighter than my last visit... I figured it was a bit too much of a chance to take.

I really must go to Berlin zoo, I’ve been to Berlin a number of times but never the zoo. In fact it wasn’t actually advertised all that well so the first time I went I wasn’t even aware it was there, let alone it having pandas.

Over the last few years I’ve seen the Edinburgh pandas many times now, the best time to see them is always late afternoon, in the summer especially they don’t mind you staying near to closing time so you get the most time with them and they are often outside then, I think a lot of people just see them asleep in the morning and miss out.

Indeed the zoo entrance is neatly disguised in the streets... if you don't go looked for it then you could very well miss those... notably conspicuous gates!

I’ll be visiting on Saturday to see the pandas for the last time. I’ll also share any new updates.

We recently got some new towels for our bathroom, and we were looking for a way to give them away without throwing them to landfill when someone suggested giving them to the chimps at the zoo! We contacted the zoo and they’ll take them soon. It would be funny if we saw one of our old bath towel being used as a chimp bed.

You should go to Paira Daiza. They have five and seem to have special concessions with China over the length of time of keeping them. Even if you don't see all of them at least some are likely to be active though from my experience most activity involves sitting eating bamboo.

You mean Pairi Daiza has a lot of money and now qualms about repeating communist party propaganda.
