Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2024

Couple of arrivals at Wee Beasties since my last visit. Macleays Spectre and Lime Green Stick Insects.
The poison dart frogs have gone and their section has been emptied completely.
It would be an awful shame if the poison dart frogs are gone for good, they're one of my favourite animals at Edinburgh. Didn't one of the animal themed Lothian buses at one point have the frogs on it?

I hope they aren't gone for good. Not only cos they are on the bus but they have always fascinated me from a young age. (Also it's very fun to play spot the frog and see how many people can't see them like the wildcats)
I was very envious of Copenhagen's poison frog collection. Fingers crossed there are more frogs again soon!
Hopefully it wasn't some sort of traumatic illness and hopefully it's a refurb.

I'd visited all week for the last time this week, as it was my last summer school before being too old for it :(

All of the new things I'd noticed or heard about:

- There is a small new sign at the front of the sun bear enclosure about Wojtek, which I thought was a nice touch, though it does not specifically say that he lived in that enclosure, which he did.

- Saw the RRHs in their new enclosure- nice enough, although the entire enclosure is not viewable yet. Personally I do think it was a little bit of a downgrade from their huge enclosure they used to have, but the new inhabitants will be much better suited in it. it doesn't look as if the walk-through part that was in the original pelican enclosure will reopen though, sadly.

- Saw the new titi, which looked comfortable in their new enclosure. The pygmy marmosets have moved into the same enclosure as the Goeldis, and the Cotton-topped moving into the second enclosure from the fourth. The third enclosure is now home to the titis, with the fourth enclosure empty and the cloud rats still in the fifth enclosure (saw them outdoors for the first time ever )

- We were going to give the enrichment we made to the giraffes, but their indoor enclosure was having its heating fixed, so the giraffes were locked out and we could not give them the enrichment, instead giving it to Qabid the rhino, who really enjoyed tearing them apart.

- One side of living links was closed off, although I could not see what they were doing.

- The armadillos are still in the former male koala enclosures. Does anyone know when these refurbishments to the house will take place?

- As already said briefly in this post, the former Red river hog enclosure is closed off for refurbishment for a new species, thought to be cheetah. The African aviary viewing area next to it is closed off, and I could see some new wood had been put in the new enclosure replacing the old stuff.

- As already said further up, the dart frogs, corn snake, Milksnake and axolotl are no longer there, which Macleay's spectre and lime green stick insects newly put in. The new zebra enclosure seems to be progressing nicely.

- The chimp group seems to be coping well with Rene's death. Qafzeh was back with the rest of the troop by the Monday, and they all seemed to be acting fairly normally. Rene's sign has been removed from the chimp troop ID board as well.

- I was very happy to see that they corrected the very poor labelling of a tuskless Female Asian Elephant as an African elephant, but it has been corrected. Someone must have written a complaint to the zoo about it. Just a shame that it is nearly the end of the Lego displays.

- Warty pigs are back in the enclosure that the RRHs were in temporarily. I'm not sure where the warties were during the river hog's stay.

From the zoos website:

Edinburgh Zoo has welcomed a brand-new species ahead of the summer holidays. Daisy, Shelly and Lancelot, female leopard tortoises, recently arrived from Blackpool Zoo and can be spotted by visitors in the zoo’s pygmy hippo house.
Saw them when I visited yesterday. Also noticed the giant panda art on the outside of the toilets has been appropriately replaced by a red panda mural.

The new building on the side of the otter enclosure is supposedly where they will put a new otter experience, where you can feed the otters through small holes in the windows.

So according to the new arrivals post on the zoo’s website, they’re from Welsh Mountain Zoo instead of Blackpool? (I guess the titis were from there so maybe you got mixed up)

2 Pieces of April 2024 News Worth Mentioning:

On April 12th, it was announced that the zoo transferred a (0.1) northern koala named Inala to the Planckendael Zoo in Belgium.

ZOO Planckendael on Instagram: "Meet koala Inala! Ze is 4 jaar oud en komt uit @EdinburghZoo. Samen met haar verzorgers maakte ze de oversteek tot bij ons. Inala vormt een kweekkoppel met onze man Bouddi. Love is in the air? Hopelijk wel! Maar koala’s zijn solitaire dieren, wat betekent dat ze apart leven. Ze ontmoeten elkaar enkel om te paren en gaan nadien elk hun eigen weg. Je herkent Inala aan haar prachtige, pluizige oren. Welkom in ZOO Planckendael, Inala! #ZOOsamen #ZOOplanckendael #koala"

On April 18th, it was announced that the zoo transferred a (0.1) Asian small-clawed otter named Eden to the Banham Zoo in Norfolk.

On July 26th, the zoo announced that a Henkel's leaf-tailed gecko hatched which is off-show.

Visited again today:

- I was wrong about the Wojtek sign- it does say he had lived in that enclosure.

- People had said before about Babu the sun bear having some sort of fatal illness- does she actually have it? She seems to be doing fine.

- The new cheetah enclosure looks good so far- the signs are up outside. I could see the sign in the indoor area and it didn’t have a subspecies sign.

Announced officially now on Instagram (pasted):

Alexa, play 'The Cheetah Girls' $9

Cheetahs are BACK at Edinburgh Zoo!

Our newest arrival is settling in and visitors will be able to spot her SOON. For now, in celebration of her arrival, YOU can be one of the first to meet Cleo and our other animals up close & find out more in the link in our stories!

Following a visit today, the aviary which used to house the Northern Bald Ibis, between the duck pond enclosure (currently home to the pelicans) and the new Cheetah enclosure, is now empty. I believe the Ibis have been moved into the outside enclosures of the old Monkey House, although this area is currently closed off due to the arrival of the new Cheetah so I only got a glimpse from a distance but there was certainly a dark coloured bird of some sort in the outside of the old Monkey House enclosures.
