Got an e-mail from iain Valentine at Edinburgh zoo, the drill and the aye aye WILL be going into the gorilla house, oh the power of zoobeat, he asked if i had a tape recorder in his office (i wish).
The 9 gelada came from Rheine zoo, and the zoo are in contact with Madrid about taking their gaur.

Its somewtimes quite easy to predict what species are going to move into what enclosures- in this case it obviously made sense the Drills going into the ex Gorilla House. Do you know if they are going to try and add a couple more females to this Drill group anytime?

Geladas- do you know the sex ratio in that group?

western plains zoo doesnt mix otter with asian rhino-the two exhibits are completely seperate but because of the rustic architecture that links the two areas the otter exhibit forms a visual extension of sorts.

No Chris i'm afraid not, it will be a group of Afghanistan urial arriving next week from the Nordens park Sweden.
And thats all i'm allowed to tell you!

So does this mean the blue-tongue restrictions have been lifted at last?

Edinburgh has announced that the Budongo trail will open on March 21st, this will be the biggest chimpanzee enclosure in the world according to the zoo.
Having cost £5.65 million pounds it will be the most expensive zoo exhibit in Britain.

I might try and get up there by Easter then.

It'll be interesting to compare it to the previous most expensive exhibit (Gorilla Kingdom)...

The brand new chimpanzee exhibit looks amazing, especially with all of the different, temperature-controlled rooms. It might give the new chimp enclosure at Monarto Zoo in South Australia a run for its money in terms of innovative design.

I see from their website that they still have Mercedes the old polar bear kicking around...

What is their target number of Chimpanzees to inhabit it? Will they be adding any new chimps or just increasing the group by further breeding? At present in the UK ONLY Chester has a proper social & decent-sized group of Chimps(also Monkey World though theirs are essentially a 'rescue' project) Examples of disappointing groups in large modern enclosures are at Dudley(females only) and Whipsnade(small imbalanced group) Lets hope the eleven chimps at Edinburgh will expand rapidly into the 20's at least and put Edinburgh's group on a par with Chester's- and make the exhibit worth the cost of building....

i think Edinburgh are looking to hold around 40 animals in Budongo.
As with the majority of building projects in Britain, i would be very surprised if Budongo was open to the public on the 21st, call me sceptical i know, but i hope i am wrong.

Unlike Gorilla Kingdom ;) What is the current situation like with Edinburgh's chimps?

and Re: Kiang's post. 40 animals!! That would be an impressive group to see...

Are any other animals going to be featured in Budongo besides Chimps?

The press articles and the information on the zoo's website all state the same thing: a target of 40 chimpanzees. Hopefully the enclosure is enormous...

40 Chimpanzees sounds excellent :) Even Chester's group is only about 25 strong. With a group that size they will need a good 'cohort' of adult males to give it the proper social dynamic.

Will they take the slow route, allowing the existing group to build up in numbers or the fast route, adding a whole lot more chimps? The former is my guess....

Even though the authorities are 'content' with the situation, I can still see the animal rights activists jumping on Edinburgh's back, similar to the chimp at whipsnade.

It is sad news indeed...
