Plenty of things are well researched. doesnt make it fact. just so its out there, my experience with elephants is minimal. i have worked with them very intensively but only for a short period of time.
I have never had anything to do with a circus.
It appears your ignoring my comments as both posts have said swaying is related to being in small areas and chained. my argument is that circus elephants are not always worse off than zoo elephants most of the time and swaying can be attributed to a number of things. My comments are based on our side of the world where many of the arguments you put forward are simply illegal and would result in cruelty charges if there were any truth to the claims. circus elephants CAN have more enriching lives.
 
Does Mila sway much since she arrived at FZ - does anyone know? I don't remember seeing her swaying out in the paddock.
 
Also you missed a crucial word when quoting me "often" as well as telling you exactly where it came from

I just dont like that people always jump to the worst possible conclusions. i think each elephant is an individual, when looking in to the welfare of an animal it should be treated as such. Using generalisations of species behaviour to determine whats best for an individual can have seriously detrimental effects on the animal.

+1 definitely individuals and each handle their situation differently

Radio New Zealand : News : National : Franklin Zoo to close while keeper death investigated
The zoo near Auckland where an elephant killed its keeper is closing while the Department of Labour investigates the death.

Helen Schofield, 42, died being crushed by the animal at Franklin Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary in Tuakau on 25 April.

Auckland Zoo took over the running of the sanctuary temporarily following the death.

On Friday Franklin Zoo announced it would close during the investigation which is expected to take up to six months.

The zoo is trying to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to send the elephant named Mila to a sanctuary in the United States.

Auckland Zoo spokesperson Kevin Buley says his staff will continue to look after the animals.

He says decisions on the long-term future of the Franklin facility are in the hands of its staff and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

and on the zoo's website it says: "WE ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE"
 
I reckon Auckland Zoo keepers should get ready to do the same for the Kingdom of Ian (Ian Stevenson the jumped up book-keeper) the park previously known as Zion Wildlife Gardens. I cannot see that shambolic outfit lasting too much longer.

@Cadders - was Auckland Zoo staff involvement part of the succession plan that had to be in place for Franklin Zoo to be permitted to house Jumbo?

I am trying to understand why 5 and 6 Auckland keepers are going down there, pretty much on a daily basis, when only one FZ personnel has been lost. Was there nobody else at FZ who could look after Jumbo PC?

And, are the regular FZ keepers incapable of servicing the rest of the collection?
 
He sure does pick 'em! CB has a tendency towards the 'New Best Friend' syndrome that has seen friends and supporters turned into enemies and antagonists. He will not shake Stevenson so easily (get it? Shakin' Stevenson.. Ah stuff it, it wasn't that good..)

And anyway, hey! It's an easy thing to do - accidentally put someone else's money into your own bank account. (Isn't it? No - I didn't think so either.)

Zion will thrive because CB will soon be rolling in the money from his African Wildlife Docos he made while in South Africa.
His South African business partners are eagerly awaiting his return so they can continue with their plans re his documentary making project.
He is obviously a success in South Africa as there are a few people very keen on catching up with him when he returns, so I foresee a similar situation right here in New Zealand.

Yes Fred Berrange of the Leopard Conservation Project and Ed Hern of the Rhino and Lion Preserve are awaiting for his return so they can speak with him about the footage he took from them and the money that is owed to them as well. They are very eager to discuss it.

Add to that a few equipment suppliers, hire companies and support employees who are keen to renew acquaintanceships with CB and discuss up and coming projects right after they touch on the subject of payment for services provided previously.

I went to Franklin Zoo soon after Mila arrived and she was swaying quite a lot. I last went there only a few days before the tragedy, and the difference in Mila's behaviour was amazing. She no longer swayed at all, was much more confident and happy, looked into visitors' eyes which she apparently didn't used to do. She also no longer put her foot out for it to be shackled.

No, I was told by someone who spent a lot of time with Mila. Everything else I observed personally. The first time I went to Franklin Zoo was in January 2010 or December 2009, and the last time I went was the 21st or 22nd of April 2012.
