Noah's Ark Zoo Farm Elephants Arrive

I don't think they mean moving from fc to pc. They mean moving an elephant from one collection to another using pc.

even that won't be that special I guess....

And when animal welfare ist that important, why the hack they plan to keep 1,1??? are they expecting any major flooding in the coming years or so?

As our friend Maguari so succinctly put it- 'they will take whatever elephants they can get'- at least in the first place. I'm sure they want more than 2 and I suspect the reason they are getting 1.1 is because that's what they've been offered from the still 'secret' location. But I am sure they propose to acquire additional females when they can get them, as they didn't build that enclosure for just two elephants.

Anybody that has visited all the collections that exhibit African Elephants in the UK should be able to work out just which secret location in the North West of England it is!!

I hope the female African elephant concerned does not grieve at being parted from her companions at her current home.

The responsibility is for the receiving institute as well for the institute who let a female elephant be parted on her own.

There must be very valid arguments in doing so.

I would also like to ask this question, did the owners of this zoo design and build this "elephant Eden", before having suitable animals lined up to live in it?, also did they have elephants originally lined up but has not materialised. If this is the case then I suggest they have not been entirely professional as I wouldn't personally buy a new hamster cage unless I was certain I could obtain a suitable animal to live in it. I wonder if the two elephants that are eventually to be housed in this new facility are merely a stop gap measure until something more suitable comes along, have they been purchased, are they on a hire arrangement or are they being transferred ex gratia to assist with the European breeding programme from their current "secret location"?

On their website the 'Elephant Eden' was variously described as a sanctuary for 'rescue Elephants' and then/also for a breeding group of 1.3 Asian Elephants, whereas in fact on the third throw of the dice they are ending up with two African elephants, with the apparent intention of breeding from them. That all indicates to me there was no set plan and it depended on where offered them any elephants.

I guess the Elephants concerned arrived at their present home as young(?) animals a good while ago, and haven't been in crates since then, hence the problems with the male.

I presume if that is a public viewing Gallery he is standing in, then you will view the animals from above(like their Giraffes) which is always a mistake IMO. Unless there won't be public indoor access of course.

Well Upali hadn't beenin a crate since he arrived at Chester yet they still managed to crate train him to go in 6 days, whilst working in PC so if its done right it can be done alot quicker!!
Also I wonder what Noahs think about the male only being on-loan until his new accomadation is built at his current home!

Crate training, yes, its taking an awful long time....

I think its as Maguari said- they will take whatever Elephants they can get, at least initially. That is probably more important to them than whether they are temporary or permanent. They need to put something in that enclosure having gone to all the cost of building it.

If I could I ought really to have put a 'don't' in the title of this thread.;)

I imagine that even so, they would be pretty irate if they finally got their new male after over a 6-month delay and then had to go through the hassle of sending him back only a month later! :P

It wouldn't surprise me if the plans over all of this change yet again before any Elephants actually arrive.;)

On a public tour of the facilities over the weekend of Zoo Historica we were also taken into a ground-floor viewing area , as well as the upper one shown on the interview . As the building is sunken into the surrounding area ( so that it is less obtrusive ) the pathway leads directly into the upper viewing level .

Mmmm, I have not seen the new elephant housing myself, but judging by the Youtube footage it does appear quite small, rather too much metal and not enough open spaces for my liking.
I think this collection has got a very long way to go indeed before it starts to lose the "poor reputation" that it has gained for itself in the zoo world - in fact I would compare it to South Lakes in terms of respect from within the zoo community, and in terms of managerial experience overall.
Time will tell of course, but I cannot get excited about this place, (or South Lakes for that matter!)
I believe a good zoo is created, and led, by a good zoo-man (originally) and we have many fine examples of that in the UK.

So far as I have been lead to believe it is one of if not the biggest in Europe and being part of a 20 acre enclosure it is probably OK for size.
(As at the moment it’s still … empty so I can’t say what it looks like in use:o) But I do agree that there is a lot of steel work, more than I like the look of personally, but I have been told it’s to assist in management, as they move around different areas with hot showers, scales, training walls, feeding enrichment etc. A lot of it is, in my personal opinion, excessively heavy duty, but on the other hand I have seen some worrying photos of what elephants can do to fences and gates:eek:. Come the day it actually gets used I would expect it to work very well.
I would still put money on them managing to find something to break.
