Noah's Ark Zoo Farm Elephants

Elephant Enclosure

One question that i would like to ask is where does the owners of this park get there money from ? 2 construct an elephant exhibit.Having worked with asian elephants at Port Lympne back in the mid 80,s the new Bull house did not come cheap. Just wounder in the owners are claiming EU farm subsidies, strange i know but belive me the EU,are very good at handing out money and as this park was a farm, one wounders if there records have been up dated.

Is it possible that Noah's Ark will end up with the elephants from the great British Cirus?

Absolutely no chance whatsoever. The three elephants that toured with the Great British Circus last year did not belong to the circus. They belong to Lars Hoelscher, a German, and were booked only for the 2009 season. There was never any plan to keep them beyond the end of last season when they returned to the continent.

Despite what has been suggested on this thread, NAZF's circus 'links' are minimal. Many of their animals have been sourced through an animal dealer/broker - including the Tigers. The Tigers have been the only animals to originate in the circus.

I find the comment about "Eastern European" zoos a little puzzling. Whatever the general concensus is on zoos in this pasrt of the world, the truth is that they are now very well organised and, in many cases, better than our zoos here in the UK. There are few elephants indeed that require "rescuing" though there certainly are animals that occasionally become available after retirement from the circus industry.

Surprised

After the tiger reports i am a little surprised that they are still planning to bring in new animals. Where else would the elephants go?
I would vote against as i do think they are not equipped to cater for elephants. I am not sure that they can really care for what they have?

Thanks for that, Gentle Giant - an interesting mix of 'antis' and 'NIMBYs' among the objections!

I particularly love this one:

I object strongly to this proposal. Noahs arc has a poor history with animals and our society should be showing more kindness towards nature, not imprisoning it for entertainment.

Its a waste of resources and will just add more suffering to an already grief stricken world.

He must be a riot at parties...

Elephants are sentient beings and should not be incarcerated in prisons. It is a cruel, barbaric and unnecessary practise. I have seen elephants in zoos and they display signs of psychological damage, caused by their being trapped in small enclosures with no real life. If you have any conscience, then you would object to this proposal.

Always nice to ask for people's support by questioning their basic humanity. I really do not like these people. (And I say that as someone who also doesn't think Noah's are ready for elephants)

That's a lot of objections. I can't see it being accepted if the Council take them seriously.

Looking at the plans of the house and the size of the paddock, reminds me of Whipsnades set up, i wonder if they are basing their potential elephant programme on that?

Thing is - quite a lot of them are the same over-the-top nonsense as I quoted above - if I were in the Council planning department I'd have a hard time taking them seriously.

This collection is becoming more suspect by the month ... Amen, R.I.P., is all we can hope for (LOL). Knowing planning departments (in-)ane proclivaties it might just be given that permission.

I think the objection has to be on the plans or location rather than 'I don't want them to'. I think they far too amateur in their management to keep elephants, they seem to be in a rush and haven't paused to consider or act upon the Council/DEFRA invesigation.

There is no denying that that is a good size, but I've only ever heard bad things about this place (I might be wrong, I've never been and just going off what I've heard).

After all, I read somewhere (years ago) that Chester's outdoor paddock was 2 acres at the time, and Mercedes at Highlands has 4 acres. The point is. both of these exhibits are huge.

If Noah's Ark manage to achieve this, and so long as the space is good with enrichment and animal care, it could be a good enclosure, no?

I wouldnt say Chesters Elephant enclosure is huge, I would rate it as rather small acutally seeing the amount of Elephants they have. Although the elephants are cared for very well, I do believe the enclosure should be bigger. Which may be more easy to say than do.

Well, maybe not huge but it always seems that they have a decent amount of space. All I would really change is add a grassy paddock of equal size (maybe a little smaller) to the sandy one on the car-park side of the zoo.
This would either be an isolation paddock (quarentine, holding bulls) or the bulls would rotate with cows and calves, so that when bulls are in the grassy paddock the cows have the sandy one, and vice versa. Only other thing I could think of is to reduce the size of the herd, but this could have a negative impact on such a social animal in my opinion.

With new access in Natural Vision, do you think that they may develop on the existing car park? And if so do you think they will make a second elephant paddock?

Good idea's, I do not think they will expand into the car park, a few reasons...

Anywho back on with the subject, I really do hope this enclosure works out well and I really hope (Im probably going to get slated for this but) there are no prayers or stupid signs.
