Sadly Annabel passed away on sunday after falling into the moat and being put down by emmen staff. Second death caused by the moat ( that I can think of) the first being Bo Gyi's.

Wonder how the herd will react to this surely she will be missed I assume Yu zin will most likely take over?

Argh bloody moats! When will zoos learn?
How old was she? I'm assuming she was the matriarch?

How sad :(
Are they going to do anything about the moat?

Poor elephant , luckliy she didn't suffer for a prolonged period of time.
Rest in peace Annabel.

Cause of death: broken neck (hence she could not be raised back on her feet).

I wish for that sometime in the future we - zoo vet management - will have managed an effective method/procedure for treating broken bones in mega vertebrates like elephant, rhino, giraffe and hippo (the weight busters so to speak ...) :)

Amneville zoo has received a 6 year old female African elephant called Goni from Osnabruck zoo in Germany, to join their group of 1.2

That'S right, but Goni is not 6. She is wildborn in 1993.
In Osnabrück she was the leader of the group. In the last time she has got a lot of problems with Sabi an older female without tusks, beacuase Goni is very dominated. Sabi has got lot of wounds. One of his ears was ripped. In Osnabrück she attacked a keeper a few years ago, too. Since that they used the protected contact.
Osnabrück has now 1,2 elephants.

One year ago there was a rumor, that the bull from amneville should transfered to Osnabrück to breed with Goni. Now it is the other way.

168kg that's a heavy baby!!
Thanks for the news I've been waiting on this birth for a while.

Fantastic news and I hope everything will be great.

BTW - Berlin's elephant house is pretty full now. I wonder if zoo has plans to send some of older females?

I read somewhere that there is a new exhibit going to be built, can anyone confirm this?
And from what I can think of this calf is the largest female born in captivity, again I need confirmation.

@ Jurek: I dont know nothing about any transfers of older elephant cows of Berlin Zoo!

I read somewhere that there is a new exhibit going to be built, can anyone confirm this?
And from what I can think of this calf is the largest female born in captivity, again I need confirmation.

There are existing plans to enlarge the current outdoor facilities in Berlin Zoo soon:
Umbau im Zoo: Endlich Platz für Elefanten - B.Z. - Berlins größte Zeitung
You are right, it´s really a heavy elephant calf (if it is really the largest female elephant calf born in captivity i dont know!); gestation period of Pang Pha: 672 days, a little bit above average.
Gestation Period - Inseminate artificially and Pregnancy of elephants
Weight and Size of elephants in zoo and circus
Nevertheless it was a quick delivery without any complications!

How are they planning to name the calf? zoo keepers? or are they holding a contest to the public?
