Bangka of Rotterdam Zoo (Diergaarde Blijdorp) is pregnant. The father of the unborn calf is Timber who is also born in Rotterdam just like Bangka

She will deliver her baby in August 2010

That's great news! I was hoping Bangka to get pregnant and Timber is a great looking young bull. Is there an article I can read?

Yes there is

It is Dutch so you can translate it with Google Translate

olifant Bangka is drachtig (25/3/09)

Last night Sammy of Blijdorp was transported to Parc Paradisio in Belgium. Because of the heat the transport was at night. Everyhing went well.

Paradisio has two females:

Claudy (46)
Sandry (9), daughter of Claudy

thanks for the news,
maybe one day he'll produce a calf with sandry. I assume now he won't go back to amersfoort?

You never know. Alexander may stay in Amerfoort for the next 5 years. What will happen after he left?

What happened to the plans to send Alexander to Sevilla to become part of the batchelor group and help socialise the young bulls?

Persoanlly i think Alexander should really be retired as he has quite a few offspring and being part of the Ramat Gan line of elephants he has 8 full brother and sisters which are breeding in Europe, America and Asia so this line is becoming way too overrepresented.

Just there are too few breeding bulls right now in Europe to retire Alex. He is needed. He has mainly daugthers and there is only one female in Amersfoort pregnant by him right now, so it doesn`t seem he will produce that many more calves there. The other 3 females may already be too old to breed, they didn`t get pregnant in the nearly 2 years Alex is there, so it`s likely they will never breed at all.

Well, I'm not sure about that. When a babyelephant is roaming the area it has an effect on the other elephants. Some elephants become in oestrus (again) even if they were not before. So, if the delivery is going well this time, it might be possible that another cow will become pregnant in the near future.

Altough Jula is 20 I don't think it is already to late for her. And the studbook keeper knows what he is doing.

Sabi from Halle zoo will leave on Tuseday for Safari Beeske Bergen. This is to prevent inbreeding with her son Abu. Shame she is being seperated from the herd but at least she could breed again and possibly kick start breeding in the netherlands!

Also, apparently after the summer Po Chin and Assam (ex-chester) from Bellewaerde will leave to join breeding groups somewhere!! They're only 9 years old but Bellewaerde will be getting another couple of younger bulls.

thanks for the update,

but what about Tana his half sister. She could potentially fall pregnant

None of the females left in Halle are related to Abu. Abu was born in vienna to Colchester's Tembo and Sabi. However Tana and Panya from Tierpark Berlin were born to the Berlin Tembo!! But they are defiantly different bulls. There are too many elephants with the same name!

Sabi had no close friends in Halle and was often somewhat agressive against ´the lower ranking females Tana and Bibi, I think it`s very good for her and for the other elephants too that she has moved.
From what I`ve heard, the enclosure in Ieper is not suitable for adult males, so they have to move the teenage bulls out while they`re still pretty young. It would be better if no more bulls were kept at Ieper.

This night a little bull was born in Cologne. This is the first offspring of aye Shan May (14)

Last Wednesday (22.7) a little Girl was born in Whipsnade. Emmet x Kaylee. His 8th and her 3nd offspring.
