European elephants

Well, it's all a matter of taste. Yes Sammy is the most beautiful bull of The Netherlands, but Radza is still impressive to me. And he is so gentle! Never aggresive, and always friendly to the other bulls. Last Sunday I saw Letsongmon walking underneath his chin, and as ususal Radza just lifted his head a little to pass him through.

If there are some elephants born in Amersfoort and Sammy is back, I hope to see him as gentle as Radza. Or as Nikolai! Shortly after the birth of Yindee this bull was baby sitting while the mother and aunt Win Thida were standing aside. He runs after Yindee, played with her, etc. Even when the two were out of side mother Thong Tai didn't react. Only after some minutes she slowly walks to the bulls enclosure to look after her daughter.

No, all other bulls have the normal weight of 4000 - 6000 kilograms but Radza is 7200 kilograms! Perhaps there is another elephant a bit larger then average but I don't know which one.

Apparently Bindu is Europes second largest Bull, height of 3.15 meters and about 5.5 tons. Though america's largest bull Oregon zoo's Packy is 6340kgs and almost 3.2 meters.

But no bull comes close to Radza, not even the royal elephants of Kerala. He is near the size of the great Raja Gaj, world's largest asian elephant, currently presumed dead.

From what I have read on the net Raja Gaj is in a class on his own in terms of size and weight :D

MARK, Alexander was born in Ramat Gan (Tele Aviv) zoo to the bull Motek and cow Warda, he has one tusk. Quite a large bull as well. And has lots of offspring, 13 inculding the ones not born yet. Stole this one from your site UntBwe.

Taken in 2005 so his tusk has grown a bit (only close up i could find)

The present exhibit was build for 15 elephants, there ar now 16, but 2 of them will leave the zoo later this year.

The zoo is making plans for a new to build park and the new elephants exhibit will 3 or 4 times larger then the present one. They have plans to make a separate bulls exhibit. So Radza will get his own exhibit...

When will this exhibit be complete? What theme will it have?
Does this mean that this one is built for 45 elephants? (sarcasm)

Best prospect however for me is Sammy, he's going to be a very handsome animal in about 10 years time (VERY high on his feet, and a normal set of tusks).

Though i do think it is a matter of opinion on what bull looks the best, i do agree
that Sammy will look great in the future a magnificent bull. Siam was an amazing sight, you take great photos Jwer.

Thanks for that Dragon

By that time the older cows will be thrity, they will have Ma Ya Yee, Ma Palai and Mingalar Oo as prime breeders, and the enclosure is made for 45 elephants, will there be importation of new elephants?
And Radza by then will start to become non-productive, any further news?

The 45 elephants was a joke! I don't think that they will have more then 20.

In 2014 Emmen will hopely have more female offspring by Radza. Shwe Zin is 7 then, so still young enough to have Radza - her father - in the neighbourhood.

And who's says that elephant bulls will stop mating at the age of 48? Motek of Ramat Gan (Israel) is 48 and had his last calf 2 years ago. Le Petite, the mother of that calf (La Belle) is 23, so Motek can still mate her. Chieng Mai of Copenhagen is 49 en also had his last calf two years ago.

So, if Radza still lives then, and is healthy he still can have some offspring.

Yeah thats what i thought, but then again i thought you were serious a one point (silly me) yes i'm familar with those bulls, its just every bull is different but in general bulls stop mating beyond 45 years apparently to many picture book information but Radza doesn't have any competition, (The wild and zoo are different, i can't use common sense sometimes!) hope he can have more offspring, such a beautiful specimen.

I have a bet that the next calf will be female, if you look Radza's descendants they have gone girl, boy ,girl ,boy. So there is a high chance that luck may come into play,

Where the h** do you have the information from that "bulls in generally stop mating beyond 45"?! That is wrong. There are elephant bulls in zoos who sired calves after their 45th birthday - Motek/Ramat Gan, Chieng Mai/Kopenhagen, Siam/Paris. Most importantly, research from the Amboseli elephant project proves that bulls over 40 are the MOST sucessful breeders! Even those bulls who are 50+ don`t stop mating, unless they are in very bad physical condition (shortly before death for example).

Very few male animals of any species (including humans..) lose the urge to mate until very shortly before senility/death. There is certainly no cut-off date. I suppose in wild situations there may be an age limit after which males at least of certain species become less successful breeders, due to being deposed in the mating stakes by younger or stronger males, but its not due to lack of interest...

That's good to know! As the resident silverback we'll take your word for it...

Yes, older elephant bulls in the wild are replaced by younger and stronger ones. So, the older bulls simply can not mate because of losing his high rank. It's not said that it is a physical problem!
