Wow i cannot believe you made olifantenhuis! Thanks for the other stuff, I ask though is Calvin going to be breed with corny,Ratna or slim possibility Bala?
And what will happen to Chamundi i read somewhere that he was moving to Budapest.
The other sites i can't translate.
 
The facts sofar:

Calvin shall stay in Hannover for now but eventually he has to go to prevent inbreeding with his two five years old daughters. But there is no hurry. In the meanwhile he can stay together with Nikolai.
Calvin is a candidate for Munster Zoo. Chamundi should go to Ostrava but because there is no hurry it is not definitive yet.
In Munster Calvin can breed with the young females Corny, Ratna and Bala.
 
Untbwe do you have further answers about the stillbirth of the elephant cow Shu Thu zar in colonge zoo? Aparently there is a possibliy that it belonged to Aye Chan May because of the body size and mummification.
So that means that she could still be pregnant and give birth any time now.

Khiang Hin Hin of Hannover Zoo gave again birth to a male calf on May 6. His name is yet unknown

You can see a movie of the birth and some pictures made afterwards on the website of Hannover Zoo

@Dragon: You really need to take into consideration that the plans regarding the bull transfers (Chamundi, Calvin ect...) are just "plans", suggestions by the EEP and /or the zoos. Nothing is firm until the bull is standing in the crate! So if someone has the info that Calvin is going to Ostrava and another person says he is going to Munster, both can be right because this may be the different options discussed by the zoos and the EEP.

The calf looks very good, haven't found anything about weight but i don't think he is massive.

Thanks, for correcting me, but i'd just like to see a clear view.
 
We´d all love to get accurate information, but how is that possible when the EEP and the zoos involved have not yet made a final decision? You need to be patient, as diificult as it is.

About the Hannover calf, he is 140 kg, which is pretty big. He is not tall, but not at all skinny!

He is pretty big the same as his brother Tarak birth weight. Not massive, I wish Hannover had holds elephant naming competition ( they don't) The herd is getting pretty large at Hannover, But from what i have seen in pictures and read the Jungle palace is not at all a small enclosure. ( then again every zoo has room for improvement, like all of us)
 
140 kg! Well, the average weight for bulls is around 125, so he is a big calf. For example: Ananda of Emmen was 130 at birth.

@Ashley-h: What Khaing is doing is normal procedure with elephants. She is kicking him to see if he's alive and she wants him to stand up. As you can imagine that's important in the wild. Baby elephants are very vulnerable and a prey for lions, tigers etc.

What I don't like is that she was standing alone in a box. It is normal to have some experienced mothers around to help with the delivery. Zoos like Emmen and Rotterdam have proved that births can take place within the herd or at least with one other female in the same box like Amsterdam did. On a video of the birth of Yindee you clearly can see how Win Thida is giving the final push to mother Thong Tai.

Last year in Amersfoort all went wrong because granmother Khine War War was kicking the baby to see if it was alive but didn't stop. She couldn't make the switch between agressive kicking and taking care for the baby. As you can see on this video Khaing Hnin Hnin switched to gentle care and is helping the baby with getting up.

After 2.5 hours he had his first milk from mother.

I agree with you Unt Bwe there is a line between enrichment, and amusement and cruelty. I don't think it is right with, Sayang under stress of learning so much so called tricks. 帮助大象！, Gajah Keluar!

On the topic of large calves, not trying to spread offense to anyone there are ways of getting them:

The calf being overdue or late so it has more time to grow
Large parents, such as Ananda, Radza being the father,
Young growing parents, since the mother is growing as well the calf can devolp a more massive size.
And diet control,

With about the care for elephants, there are common cases where first time mothers attack the calves (pain can make elephants react very badly), or the mother rejects the calf and is taken care of another cow of the herd. Usually the mother will then start caring for the calf. But there are some cases where an auntie cares for the calf its whole life.
 
That's the reason why zoos should let the elephants give birth within the herd. When the mother is not taking care other elephants can. But if you let the mother deliver alone there is no aunt to take care of!

In the large herd of Emmen we see always one or two sisters/aunts helping the mother the first weeks. Ananda for example was hardly to watch because his sister Ma Palai and 'aunt' Ma Yay Yee were protecting him very much. While the mother just was standing in the neighbourhood.

About the weight of calfs: Shwe Zin of Emmen was nearly 85 kilograms, and the caregivers thinks that the mother was carrying her for only 18-19 months. Between the birth of Shwe Zin and her older brother Letsongmon was only 26 months!
 
Would any of you guys in Europe know which zoo in Europe has bred the most Asian elephants to date and who has been the most successful sire?
