Exotic Mammals in Australian Zoos

@Osedax

probably find soon they will say all Red deer from Great Britain and Ireland are C.e scoticus as the channel from mainland Europe is what made them a subspecies in first place (maybe Irish ones are unique, not even sure Ireland has them too just assuming so).

tongue in cheek response: they're a mix of English and Scottish red deers but with Brexit they're considering having another referendum to rejoin the EU themselves

scoticus isn't a valid subspecies anyway, they originate from the same refugium as other Western European and Scandinavian deer so are basically the same, so just C. e. elaphus

generic African Lions (Panthera leo) – Adelaide; Altina; Billabong Koala and Wildlife Park; Darling Downs; Hunter Valley; Mansfield; Melbourne; Mogo; Monarto; National Zoo; Perth; Shoalhaven; Sydney Zoo; Taronga; Werribee; Western Plains Zoo; Zoodoo. Also at Zambi (not open to public)

Adelaide Zoo no longer has lions after the deaths of their remaining pair (Amani and Mujambi):

Over the weekend Mujambi’s suffered a medical episode, and despite the best care by our veterinary team, the difficult decision was made for him to be humanely euthanised. Amani was then put to sleep shortly after as the negative welfare and aspects of her life without Mujambi were determined to outweigh any positives of remaining alone.

*Binturong (Arctictis binturong) – Adelaide; Australia Zoo; Currumbin; Darling Downs Zoo (penicillatus); Hunter Valley; Melbourne; Mogo; Perth; Taronga; Tasmania Zoo (penicillatus)
Australia Zoo's two binturong died around June of this year. If he is still alive, only a single male binturong (Baru, born at Taronga in 2007) at Mogo is the last individual descended from the 2000s Taronga/Melbourne imports.

*Arabian Camel (Dromedary) (Camelus dromedarius) – Altina; Darling Downs; Gorge Wildlife Park; Hunter Valley; Mansfield; Mogo; Oakvale; Shoalhaven; Sydney Zoo; Taralga; Taronga; Tasmania Zoo; Werribee; Western Plains Zoo; Wings Wildlife Park; Zoodoo. [Also undoubtably held on show in other small collections apart for the ones listed here]

Taronga Zoo no longer has Arabian Camels

*Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)
Adelaide Zoo imported a pair (Wang Wang and Funi) in November 2009 on a ten-year loan from China (later extended). Both were born in captivity at Wolong. The pair returned to China in November 2024.
The only other Giant Pandas ever exhibited in the country were a pair called Xiao Xiao and Fei Fei in 1988, which were on an Australasian “tour”, staying at three zoos (Melbourne, Taronga and Auckland) for a few months each before returning to China.

Adelaide Zoo have Giant panda again:

From socials:

In the early hours of this morning, Giant Pandas, Yi Lan and Xing Qiu (pictured in his travel crate), landed at Adelaide Airport before making the journey across the city to Adelaide Zoo.

After a 15-hour journey from Dujiangyan, the pair are now now settling in to their new home and getting to know the Adelaide Zoo keeping team.

During this time, Bamboo Forest will be closed to the public while the pandas complete a mandatory quarantine period. Zoos SA expects the public will be able to catch their first glimpse of the panda pair in mid-January, once this period is complete.
