Exotic Mammals in Australian Zoos

Dingos, technically being an exotic mammal to Australia albeit introduced to the mainland continent some 5,000+ years ago (the estimate of how long ago they actually goes further and further back as time and research goes on which is cool). It's not easy working out how many zoos and wildlife parks actually have dingos currently. But this is what have tried to find:

*Dingo (Canis lupus dingo) – are at: Adelaide Zoo; Alexandra Park Zoo; Alice Springs Desert Park; Altina; Armadale Reptile Centre; Australia Zoo; Australian Reptile Park; Australian Walkabout Wildlife Park; Ballarat; Bargo (Dingo Sanctuary); Billabong Zoo; Bunbury; Caversham; Cleland; Cohunu; Cooberrie; Crocodylus; Currumbin; Darling Downs Zoo; Dreamworld; Featherdale; Fleay's; Gorge; Greenough; Gumbuya; Halls Gap Zoo; Healesville Sanctuary; Hunter Valley; Jirrahlinga; Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park; Koala Park; Kuranda Wildlife Park; Kyabram; Lone Pine; Malcolm Douglas Wilderness Park; Mansfield Zoo; Maru; Melbourne Zoo; Mogo; Moonlit Sanctuary; National Zoo; Oakvale; Paradise Country; Phillip Island Wildlife Park; Ranger Red's Zoo; Rockhampton Zoo; Shoalhaven (may be gone now); Sydney Zoo; Symbio; Taralga; Taronga Zoo; Tasmania Zoo; Territory Wildlife Park; Urimbirra; Wagga Zoo; Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary; Waminda; Warrnambool; West Australian Reptile Park; Wildlife HQ Zoo; Yarra Valley Nocturnal Zoo; Zambi Wildlife Retreat.. & other some smaller animal parks; also considerable number in private ownership as pet (though many in these latter ownership circumstances are hybridised with domestic dogs. Though purebred dingos are maintained in private ownership in Australia too. & of course in the wild of mainland Australia and some offshore islands like Fraser Island. Some Indigenous communities would still have dingos present too, most communities now have domestic dogs as pets, a significant number of their pet dogs descend from dingos mating with different domestic dog breeds over the period of western intrusion across the continent).

No more 'technically' exotic than Homo sapiens. I think most people accept that dingoes are native even if the event is geologically recent.

Yeah thats very true. They have been on this continent for a colossally long time (excluding Tassie', Bass Strait Islands, Kangaroo Island few other offshore islands; impressed about the Fraser Island population, not sure if maybe the Butchulla people (especially members of the Boorangoora, Dulingbara and Ngulungbara groups back in ancient times) brought them there to K'gari eons ago).

Did you hear about how some ecologists found some of the New Guinean wild dogs/singing dogs right up in the highlands of Papua New Guinea/Western Papua not too long ago; think had been a long time since anyone, except the local people, had seen those wild dogs living completely seperate from humans, most of their conspecifics being village dogs. From memory think they're slightly smaller build than dingos, but generally the same for the most part.

Hunter Valley WP no longer has 1.0 Jabari the cheetah (and hence does not have cheetahs currently).

*side note, found it interesting that from the 19th century to 2008 over 2,100 (at least 2,114) cheetahs have been wild caught for zoos or other captive settings (global '08 studbook).

Yes interesting regarding the volume and history of cheetah imports.Random Sunday information to follow . Part of this reason is that the difficulty breeding cheetah in captive setting and of course attitudes. My understanding that AUstralia did not really successfully breed cheetah until about 2003 and that there had been a university study that assist the understanding of cheetah breeding. Last year an Australian breeding centre actually sent back an Australian breed cheetah female to the wilds of Africa (supported protected area) and she is doing well.

A correction that Australia’s first surviving Cheetah cubs were born in 1987.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo was the first zoo in Australasia to successfully breed and raise Cheetah cubs to adulthood, with the birth of a litter of three males in 1987 (Tsavo, Kibu and Mikumi). Litters had previously been born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo and Wellington Zoo, but the cubs had died as neonates.

There’s an article about them here:

That female being 'Eddy' who was captive born at the Wild Cat Conservation Centre in NSW. Apparently WCC have since sent a further pair of cubs to be released but it's unconfirmed whether this has occurred yet or not.

Thank you for the extra information and the share. Thank for clarifying I did not mean that there were no cheetah born just not really successful living out comes. I had a 3 rd year uni reproduction assignment on cheetah reproduction in early 2000’s. And Thank you for the history this is great.

Thank you will be very interesting . Dakari Eddie’s brother is a MSP and hopefully contribute to the breeding population (they both have valuable genetics info from a direct source)

It would be interesting to properly research this, as I have a similar list but had Altina at number one (with 35), whilst Tasmania only had 29 from my count. The rest seems relatively accurate - but nonetheless, I'd be keen to see the specific species listed at each facility (perhaps in a separate thread), if you have the time.

I can vouch for Tassie Zoo as I was there just over a month ago. The Altina difference might be that I’m not including domesticated camelids (basically because I couldn’t be bothered tracking down which tiny little wildlife parks have dromedaries).

I believe it was mentioned a week or so ago that the DDZ has a fallow deer with the red deer so that might be an extra species!

Zambi Wildlife Retreat have just reported that they now have Przewalski’s horses after helping to rescue a herd that were abandoned in a park near Sydney many years ago. Two more herds remain which they will be going back for.

Wow, what an incredible story. It’s disturbing to hear of the suffering and deaths amongst this population, which has apparently formed three herds from the initial group of founders; but good to hear a monumental effort has gone into capturing and relocating them to a better life.

Great news - the first of three herds has officially arrived at Zambi Wildlife Retreat who have offered to provide a home for the abandoned horses from Mulgoa.

From the video it appears the first herd consists of eight individuals - including at least one youngster.

Oh that's wonderful, go Zambi, what an awesome thing to do, such brilliant news. Thanks for sharing Matty and Jambo. The video of them is great (they're really beautiful hey), quite inspiring that they've done that for the horses hey, such a happy occurence.

Can somebody disclose the history of these horses and how they were able to be obtained privately? What was their backstory and why were they neglected ?

I remember reading at the beginning of the thread how about 20 were kept in private hands in the estate ; so was pleasantly surprised when I just read the most recent post saying that there are three herds and the first one consisted of about 8 individuals.

I would recommend the following thread by @akasha:

Przewalski’s Horse Population Research Thread

Post #44 in particular goes into the foundations/beginnings of the Mulgoa herd.

The initial animals were at the Tipperary - Fernhill Estate was property of the owner, so the horses were eventually all moved across to live on the grounds of the estate.
