Extinct species

Agreed, and whether some of those species could even handle places like the Great Plains (thinking elephants and cheetahs in snow and sub-zero temperatures) seems debatable.

Elephants might do ok in south Texas or parts of California. Zebras (with limited husbandry already do well in both states), although I think Horses and Asses would be better. Cheetahs I would venture would adapt easily to the Great Basin west of the Rockies and the southern Plains. Prey availability would be the issue in most areas. Jackrabbits and Pronghorns.

It’s just a thought experiment.

Climate modelling suggests elephants couldn't, but cheetahs probably could in some areas. Nonetheless, I'm sceptical they'd have a positive ecological impact.

Pleistocene Park has the same issue – extremely high mortality rates over winter.
