Famous no-shows.

Mountain chickens often seem to be hard to spot in exhibits.
Again, strangely not in my experience. The frogs at Bristol anyways were rather reliable animals. They are pretty big frogs.

To be fair, Chester's mountain chicken enclosure is pretty big with plenty of places for them to hide. I'd say I see them 50% of the time though. The smaller species in there are way harder to find.

For me it's the penguin and sea bird enclosure at Hagenbeck, which I really want to see.
I visited the Zoo four times total.
On my first visit the Eismeer was still under construction and on the other three visits it was always closed due to bird flue or corona.

Thanks Swampy. Recently I saw two frogs on top of the leaves near the roof. It must have been those. I could only see them from underneath so I did not know what they were.

This seems to be improbable but in 2009 I visited Dublin Zoo twice in a week and never saw an elephant.:)

Some visitors complained that they hadn't seen elephants at London Zoo. The elephants were either inside or outside and the visitors hadn't looked at the right place.

The Milwaukee County Zoo's official animal list states they have a Chevrotain in their Aviary, but not once in my eighteen years of going to that zoo have I ever once seen it, which is a shame since they're such interesting animals imo.

Well it was only on-exhibit for two years.

I visited the Manatee Springs exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo back in mid-2021 and I don’t know how, but the manatees were the only animals in the entire exhibit that ended up being a no-show for me.

The arbiter snailfish are almost never seen at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, only saw one once last year.
The aquarium's website says they are not on view at the aquarium. Probably died quickly after the opening of the exhibit, snailfishes are not easy.

Since April last year, we have been to Hamerton 16 times, I believe there are only 2 animals we've not managed to see :(
North American Cacomistle & Ringtail Possum.

The snailfish were kept for quite a long time before opening I believe and during their time on exhibit one or two were gravid, so they are probably still present.

You are sure that you are not referring to the salmon snailfish (Careproctus rastrinus) which is still in the collection?

I am referring to the arbiter snailfish, (Careproctus kamikawai), one or two were extremely swollen with eggs. Interestingly, during a visit to the aquarium today the salmon snailfish (Careproctus rastrinus) were not on exhibit.

What was in their tank instead?
