Faunaland Faunaland News

Faunaland acquired lots and LOTS of new animals which included:
  • Sailfin dragons
  • Alligator snapping turtle
  • Pied stilts
  • Arabian oryx
  • Cuvier's dwarf caiman (FINALLY A DANG CROCODILIAN)
  • Leopard geckos
  • Valais blacknose sheep
  • Rhinoceros iguana
And I saw in one video, an exhibit under construction in the bird island area. Probably for ostriches or other ratites like emus and rheas.

Hey @Fargusno ! Do you know of any other new mammals that have been acquired? Thanks!

They recently added banded palm civet, caracal, and Sumatran dholes.

This is the first (or second) for an Indonesian zoo to exhibit dholes. Canids are seldomly exhibited in Indonesia surprisingly, aside from domestic dogs in some animal shows like in TSI.

I uploaded exactly 95 photos from my August 21st, 2024 visit. Many of the exhibits at this zoo are too small for the animals, but it's a zoo nerd paradise with rarities such as: Arabian Oryx, Sunda Clouded Leopard (possibly the only Bornean subspecies individual in captivity), Asiatic Golden Cat, Sumatran Dhole, Proboscis Monkey, Spectral Tarsier, Dusky Pademelon and Grizzled Tree Kangaroo. Plus there's an incredible looking albino Siamang and a troop of albino Crab-eating Macaques.

At least one Borneo Sunda clouded leopard is currently kept in a zoo in Sabah, Malaysia

Did not have Indonesia and/or any Indonesian zoos already have some Arabian oryxes locally?
Nope, Faunaland is as of now the only holder of the species in Indonesia. Ragunan once held oryx, though it had been gone for a while.

The management or board members of the zoo has quite a close relation with an Emirati exotic pet keeper. Its possible that a couple of animals, like the oryx pair and an white camel, came as a result of their connections.

Thanks, I was actually thinking about Ragunan Zoo over the Arabian oryx.

Well contacts between Indonesia and Gulf region go back a long way (Yemen, Oman, less so UAE or KSA). I assume you are correct that the Emirati relation has provided stock to Faunaland now. I do suspect/fear the climate is not really that good for the aridland antelope.

Taman Safari once had oryxes too back in the 2000s

Some minor updates from Faunaland (07/02/2025):
  • The single Bornean clouded leopard is still alive, though very sleepy.
  • The zoo's black giant squirrel is back on display.
  • One of the Patagonian mara exhibit has been converted to house a pair of Asian small-clawed otters.
  • The single dusky pademelon has been moved to an aviary originally for some birds, next to the lesser bird-of-paradise.
  • In what appears to be a brand new addition, an white tiger are seen in an small exhibit next to the white lion. The tiger appears to still underwent a habituation period.

In today visit (15 July, 2025), some updates occur:
  • The zoo had acquired several albino water buffalos, largely free-roaming but are always accompanied by the staffs.
  • The large Babcock's leopard tortoise has been moved together with the zoo's 60ish years old Aldabra giant tortoises.
  • The zoo's Bornean clouded leopard appears to not be present on-display. While I'm afraid of the worse, but hopefully it's just a case that the animal was simply off-display for some reason, especially when it's signages is still there.
  • The zoo had also added a pair of blackbuck, in one of the smaller paddock next to the Arabian oryxes.
  • The previously Babcock's leopard tortoise exhibit now houses African spurred tortoise and red-footed tortoise.
  • The zoo had sent their white tiger elsewhere, apparently. The tiger being too big (More than 300 Kg) is cited as the reason, though the zoo is currently still finding another smaller tiger.
  • It appears the zoo's "white siamang" is no longer present, as the exhibit is empty and even the signage had been taken off. It's somewhat possible that the exhibit will house sun bears in the next few months, as an large bear is very much visible pacing back-and-fort in the the off-display holding behind the exhibit.
