Brown and Striped are pretty diurnal.
In the wild Striped are pretty much nocurnal, with only a chance of seeing them early morning/night.
Brown and Striped are pretty diurnal.
I think Brown hyenas are famous for attacking fur seal pups on the shores of the Namib and then bringing them back to the den, walking many miles in the process. They generally do this during the day, so, as TLD says, they are pretty diurnal. However, striped are more nocturnal I believe. Spotted are either, and aardwolves are obviously strictly nocturnal.
Aardwolves are not strictly nocturnal.
Not strictly but they are certainly the most nocturnal of the hyena species and feed almost exclusively at night.
Missed that (unfortunately) but did see the same aardwolf moving during the day on the very same day.1) I've seen captive aardwolves feeding on swarms of flying ants in the middle of the afternoon, among other things.
Just agreeing with this point!2) Trying to argue about aardwolf behaviour and captive habits with Andrew is like trying to ship coals to Newcastleso don't.
It's good to see somebody spelling hyaena correctly! I dislike the current trend of dropping the first "a" and writing "hyena" instead of "hyaena".All hyaena species are pretty awesome, and owing to the small size of the family I find it hard to settle on one. I think aardwolves are fantastic, but then spotted hyaena are also amazing, yet so are striped and brown... I just can't choose!
