Favorite hyena species?

I think Brown hyenas are famous for attacking fur seal pups on the shores of the Namib and then bringing them back to the den, walking many miles in the process. They generally do this during the day, so, as TLD says, they are pretty diurnal. However, striped are more nocturnal I believe. Spotted are either, and aardwolves are obviously strictly nocturnal.

Aardwolves are not strictly nocturnal.

Not strictly but they are certainly the most nocturnal of the hyena species and feed almost exclusively at night.

1) I've seen captive aardwolves feeding on swarms of flying ants in the middle of the afternoon, among other things.
2) Trying to argue about aardwolf behaviour and captive habits with Andrew is like trying to ship coals to Newcastle :P so don't.

I've debated this subject since I first saw this thread, and I can't do it. All hyaena species are pretty awesome, and owing to the small size of the family I find it hard to settle on one. I think aardwolves are fantastic, but then spotted hyaena are also amazing, yet so are striped and brown... I just can't choose!

Missed that (unfortunately) but did see the same aardwolf moving during the day on the very same day.

Just agreeing with this point! ;)

It's good to see somebody spelling hyaena correctly! I dislike the current trend of dropping the first "a" and writing "hyena" instead of "hyaena".

For me it would be aardwolf first, then striped, brown, and bringing up the rear spotted.

Unrelated, but I've spoken in a decent bit of depth with an individual who had breeding success with his Aarwolf in days past, and husbandry wise, definitely very interesting animals.

My home zoo keeps both spotted and striped hyena and I enjoy watching the striped ones more.
I've seen the brown hyena and aardwolf too and I'm tempted to say I prefer both of them over spotted and striped, but maybe that's because I've seen those species much less often (aardwolf once, brown 3 times). I'm not sure what species I would choose if all of them would be equally common in zoos, but I guess it would be
1. aardwolf
2. striped
3. brown
4. spotted

As far as seeing hyaenas go, I haven't seen any of the three true hyaenas, though I did see the aardwolf both times I went to Hamerton.
That said, from what I heard the Aardwolf is not much of a 'true hyaena' at all?

My list would have to be
1. Aardwolf
2. Striped
3. Brown
4. Spotted
Aardwolf reigns at the top due to my love of nocturnal insectivores in general and also due to the fact that my local zoo is the only in the U.S to have them, striped are just really pretty, and brown is just unique enough to go above spotted.

Striped and Aardwolves, even though I haven't seen either, let alone a Spotted Hyena (maybe I have at one point before Lincoln Park removed them)

For me, I am going to say Aardwolf (Proteles cristata), whether the Eastern (septentrionalis sp.) or Southern (ssp. cristata) is my favorite, I am going to have to say the latter.

Aardwolves are somewhat interesting animals, don't get me wrong, but I like striped the most.
Ironically, Aardwolves are the only ones I remember seeing in captivity, contrary to other's lists!
